It was bought in an ATT store. Used for 2 years and recently (about 1 and 1/2 months ago) stopped using it. Got a new iphone and guy in the shop told me it would be easy to unlock the 6s online.

I don't understand why ATT says this isn't an ATT device. I know from searching for a solution that I am not the first to have this exact problem.

did you ever have the device serviced?

Thru apple?  If so your problem could be the imei of the phone is mismatched.  Because apple is known to give you a new phone sometimes.

Yes at the Apple store.

If they did that, how did it continue to work with ATT and most importantly, what can be done now?

As a matter of fact, yes. They replaced the phone once. They had replaced the screen but it didn't work, so they replaced the whole phone.

Call and ask for tech support.  The IMEI isn’t in the system, your old IMEI may be.  You need them to approve the original phone was eligible to unlock, so your replacement is also.   It’s probably going to take an extra few days to manually process.

Hi Kenneth

I tried to unlock the device on the at&t website and got the attached message: "Looks like the IMEI number you entered doesn’t match an AT&T device. Try entering it again. Dial *#06# on your mobile phone to make sure you have the right IMEI"

The device's imei is ***. Please, help me
