3G Sunset Updates and Information

As you may have heard by now, we’re phasing out our 3G network by February 2022. This will help us make room for an even better network that will improve your experience.

To ensure our customers are prepared for this change, we have helpful information that will answer some of the most common questions:

  • Will my phone work after the 3G sunset?
  • How do I prepare if my phone isn’t supported?
  • Does this affect PREPAID?

You can find answers to these questions and learn more by visiting our 3G sunset article.

Customers still using 3G devices will most likely also be contacted via Email and Text message with more information. You can also visit your local AT&T Store or Contact Us if you have questions about upgrading.

If you believe your phone is still compatible, please check out our 3G Device Support & Solution Article for fixes you can try.

From the industry association GSMA website, regarding HD Voice;

"Can a mobile network operator or a device manufacturer use the logo independently?
The logo is intended for use by either mobile network operators or device manufacturers without additional dependence on being associated with particular devices or networks.

As shown in the illustrative examples below, this permits: I. A device manufacturer can market a device using the HD Voice logo, provided that when it is used on a call with a further HD Voice-compatible device on a network that supports the HD Voice criteria, a full HD Voice experience is provided to the user – enabling a device vendor to market a device using the HD voice logo in distribution channels other than those associated with a specific mobile network. II. A manufacturer can also use the logo for marketing any combination of devices and headsets if these meet all the requirements specified for mobile terminals and headsets. III. A mobile network operator can market their network service using the HD voice logo, provided that when two HD voice-compatible devices are used on their network (or where one device is on an interconnected network), a full HD voice experience is provided to the user. This enables a mobile network operator to market its network using the HD voice logo without having to market or supply a specific HD voice-compatible device."

Somewhere along the way AT&T lost their Cliffs Notes on HD Voice. About GSMA;

"The GSMA represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting more than 750 operators with almost 400 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset and device makers, software companies, equipment providers and internet companies, as well as organisations in adjacent industry sectors."

There is a lot of confusion about HD Voice and VoLTE and their requirement on phones to work on the new AT&T network.   If they are one and the same then that means the phones that are specified to work with HD Voice are VoLTE compliant.

They are not the same.   Again HD voice is AT&T's version of VoLTE.   Verizon has its own version as well.

Whether or not the phone will work in the future on AT&T's network is a reasonable concern.  However, hijacking your currently working phone is not a reasonable response (or perhaps not even a legal one) to the issue.  Feel free to bombard me with texts letting me know about impending doom and plead with me to call customer service.  Just don't arbitrarily redirect my calls whenever you feel like.  That's wrong and potentially dangerous.

2g and 3g sunset is not instantaneous.

I may not have imparted this to you, but the 3g shutdown is gradual, and has been going on all year.   The last day any area will have 3g service is February 2022.

To reiterate, it's a phase out, not a switch off in February.

You are being asked to replace phones that are not compliant now because 3-g service is shutting off in your area soon, before February of 2022 when the final Sunset date arrives.

AT&T has been shipping replacements since April.  My area in CT got replacements on May.

Verizon did the same.   T-Mobile checked a long list of phones off its Network in January, even though it is also not slated to turn off its 2G and 3-g service until the end of this year.

From your own posts it is apparent AT&T has made several attempts to contact you to make sure that you have a compliant phone and they have been ignored. That's on you

@lizdance40 Quite the contrary.  I have not ignored the AT&T contacts at all.  I have been to two AT&T stores and spoken to customer service twice now.  All have either assured me that my phone will work until February 2022 or have been totally uninformed on the situation.  Clearly AT&T has not properly communicated with its own representatives.  In any event, I am switching immediately to another major carrier who has indicated that my phone will work fine.

So you're going to take the word of someone who obviously does not know, over the AT&T system which says your IMEI is not compatible?

You've seen the whitelist, the phone is not on it. So the people in the store are wrong, the text messages that you have received were correct.

Again, you had plenty of warning, you are choosing to listen to wrong advice.

This screen shot says it all the are using the word BY for a reason.  They are actively switching areas right now.

Correct.   Otherwise it would say 'ON'.  And AT&T uses other words like the word phasing, and sunset, which are both terms indicating a gradual, not a sudden change.

I received a couple of sketchy text messages, I later found out were actually from AT&T, that informed me my phone is not compatible with their 4G network, which I know to be untrue, and so I need a new phone and they are sending me a new one one without asking me first.  They also threatened to  activate it automatically within 30 days if I don't do it myself before then.

I imagine I would be responsible for the cost of this unnamed phone and it's service, neither of which I ordered.

My phone is slightly over 2 years old and supports VoLTE over GSM frequencies AT&T uses, but is not on their "approved" VoLTE phone list and so won't work on their network.

Because my phone is slightly older than 2 years, I plan to replace it, with a phone of my choice, in the next couple of months which is more than HALF A YEAR before the stated cutoff date for 3G next February.

This is a total SCAM AT&T! Sending me unordered phones many months before necessary and charging me for goods and services I did not order is reprehensible  business conduct and I suspect borderline illegal and certainly amoral.

If you have any interest in keeping my family's business, I expect an immediate apology, and substantive recompense for this transgression.

They are not planning to charge you for the phone.  It is gratis.

You imagined wrong. The phone they are sending you is free. You don’t have to use it, though it may be a hassle switching back to your current phone once it is activated. If having a free phone sent to you bothers you that much, switch to a different carrier.

This is a customer populated forum, not customer support. Many customers are getting free phones but no one here can tell you if you are getting a free phone.

So I have been trying to call customer service for two days to get answers on this free phone that AT&T will provide me because of the 3G sunset junk. I have a Motorola G7 XT1962-6 that they claim won't be compatible even though it has 4G compatibility. In looking at the website the Motorola one 5G Ace would be an equivalent phone to mine.

Also a message to AT&T management, I was not thrilled with the outgoing call redirect to your customer service center. If I had an emergency and had to make a call in a hurry and all I got was the customer service center!! NOT GOOD. You need to make better decisions. Is that even legal??

There is no way I know of to find out what free phone you will get. You’ll find out when you get it. As for emergency calls, calls to 911 aren’t redirected to customer support.

I get that 911 would work but what if I had to call a family member in an emergency??
