3G Sunset Updates and Information

As you may have heard by now, we’re phasing out our 3G network by February 2022. This will help us make room for an even better network that will improve your experience.

To ensure our customers are prepared for this change, we have helpful information that will answer some of the most common questions:

  • Will my phone work after the 3G sunset?
  • How do I prepare if my phone isn’t supported?
  • Does this affect PREPAID?

You can find answers to these questions and learn more by visiting our 3G sunset article.

Customers still using 3G devices will most likely also be contacted via Email and Text message with more information. You can also visit your local AT&T Store or Contact Us if you have questions about upgrading.

If you believe your phone is still compatible, please check out our 3G Device Support & Solution Article for fixes you can try.

@bigtimedad

Can't be any clearer, if it's not listed, it won't be allowed on AT&T.

Unlocked phones that will work on at&t

While that one actually has good specs, plum phones have historically not had any LTE bands for USA carriers.  I'm sure they can't be bothered getting certified.

Received this text, is it a scam?

"AT&T FREE MSG: In Feb 2022, we're shutting down our 3G network to make improvements to our network. We're shipping new FREE cell phones to replace your devices ending in *1565*8165*. All you need to do is activate the new devices. You'll find setup information in the box. If you don't activate your new cell phones, we will automatically activate them in approximately 30 days. Once your new cell phones are activated, your current cell phones will only be able to call 911 and 611 until Feb 2022. If you need additional assistance, visit one of our stores or call us at 800.880.8581."

There is nothing at all phishy about that text, except for that I can't independently confirm that 800 number at the moment.  I'd call 611.

@slwfleming , your phone may support 4G without supporting LTE.  It may actually support data LTE without supporting VoLTE.  It may support other carrier's VoLTE without working on AT&T's VoLTE and thus needs to be replaced for AT&T voice use.

Please check these two lists to see if your phone's exact model number appears in one of them:

https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf

https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Service-Capabilities-Unlocked-Devices-ATT-Network.pdf

If it appears in neither, then you indeed need a replacement.  Either AT&T's free replacement or another from one of these lists.

Apparently AT&T won’t support the unlocked phones as the locked version is on the supported list. So it appears AT&T is punishing people that bought unlocked. Phone is SM-G950u1. Galaxy 8.

plus no advanced notification for many users. February is too close to the shopping holidays so funds are depleted. Would loved to have been able to save or shop around given enough time. $1000 is a lot to save for an unexpected expense. And NO we did not get advanced notice. Just what initially looks like a scam text sent today.

The free replacement phone is complete garbage. No wireless charging, 16gb storage. You’ve got to be kidding.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8 SM-G950U1 (the 1 meaning unlocked). The locked version of this phone is supported but apparently not the unlocked. They should be exactly the same phone but without proprietary software to lock the phone. So AT&T refuses to support just the unlocked versions? The free phone AT&T sends is extremely inferior to my current phone.

AT&T should have warned people more in advance than 4 months before shut off. Its too close to the holidays in order to save enough for a $1000 replacement. The free phone is complete garbage and not even close to the specs of the existing phone.

The text is far too close to what a scammer would send. I just happened to not completely ignore it and trash it. Nothing is shown when logging into the account on AT&T. Very bad treatment of long time customers (20+ years).

Your phone is quite likely supported on T-Mobile, as long as it supports VoLTE, if that helps. They have an IMEI checker on their website that will tell you if it is compatible. Phone manufacturers have to pay AT&T in order to have any particular phone allowed on the AT&T network. The exception is if AT&T store sells it themselves. Your phone may or may not be compatible with AT&T, but if it's not on the list, AT&T will block it.

I have been a customer since 1998, when AT&T took over Spectrun and a whole lot of promises have come up short over several decades (i.e. unlimited data forever, free phone to phone within plan, etc. etc. etc.) Every few years, I have faithfully purchased "flagship" latest and greatest phones when I needed a replacement. I am told a phone is going to be sent to me to replace a Galaxy S8+, which I bought from AT&T for over $800.00. My other S8, Note8, and S8 Active and one iphone 6S were right at $1000.00 each. Now with the 3G sunset they want to send me an A10 replacement (on line for a hundred bucks). Then the representative that I was speaking with wanted to know if i would want to upgrade to a better phone and confirmed the A10 is definitely a down grade.

Wow, just Wow AT&T.... how dare you have this kind of policy, when other competitors are GIVING AWAY flagship phone for my business. A manager was not available to speak with a loyal 23year customer and so far after 30 minutes, no call back.

replacement. I am told a phone is going to be sent to me to replace a Galaxy S8+, which I bought from AT&T for over $800.00.

If you bought your S8+ from ATT, it does not need to be replaced. It will still work fine after 3G is shut down, though it may need a software update to enable HD Voice.

In fact none of the phones that you listed, if purchased from a T and T need to be replaced all are capable of working as long as they are up to date.

The S8 series came with Android 7, which was VoLTE capable.  If AT&T thinks you need a new phone, something is wrong with how your account or phone or SIM card is provisioned. The first thing to check is that your sim card is not so old that the SIM card itself is not correctly provisioned for voice over LTE you. Also make sure that your IMEI is correct in your online account.

As for the free phone they're sending you, stick it in the drawer in case you spare.  It doesn't come with a catch, it's completely free without any obligation.

Is AT&T Really deactivating my $800.00 Samsung cell phone for good next year?

I have gotten numerous notifications from AT&T over the past couple of weeks about how they're gong to send me a free phone; apparently because they think my  $850.00 GalaxyS8+ will not work on their new network dbm they roll it out next February.

Both the texts and the emails I've received -- supposedly explaining exactly what they are doing -- could only  be described as "oblique", to say the least.

They say when I receive it I should "activate" my new phone.

They also say that if I do NOT activate my "new free" phone, after a period of time THEY will activate it...and then my Samsung S8+ will no longer work, except for emergency calls to 911 and 611.

It is definitely  NOT made clear whether or not my S8+ will work AFTER the transition, of if they are going to REACTIVATE my S8+  at all.

I have looked into this "fabulous!" new phone that's on its way to me, It is a:
U318AA Phone from Emblem Solutions LLC...and am having trouble describing it without using a string of expletives! (That's NOT "superlatives", folks...)

To give an idea of the particular "niche" this cellphone occupies, it currently sells for $39.00 at Walmart!

Exactly WHAT is going on here?

We'll be happy to assist you with your device @philippo.

As mentioned above, your phone is compatible with the 3G Sunset. Here is a full list of the approved devices.

If you are receiving notifications that your device isn't compatible, it may simply need a software update (particularly if you didn't purchase it directly from us).

Another possibility is that there may be an issue with the way your SIM card is provisioned, which may simply require you to get a new SIM card.

Everything that @formerlyknownas wrote above is applicable to your situation as well.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions; if so, we'll be happy to clarify.

If it's not the compatible At&t model, that's correct.  BTW, your phone sold for $850 5 years ago.  It's book value is about $60.

It's clear to me when they say your phone won't work on at&t, how is that not clear?

If you have an AT&T or U model as listed, it should boot with AT&T globe.  Otherwise, it's out.  If it is the AT&T model, the IMEI isn't correcr or sim is not provisioned.

why does my account say my brand new iPhone 13 will no longer work after Feb 2022?

The Apple iPhone 13 you’re using on ***.***.**** won’t work after February 2022. Be sure to upgrade to an HD Voice phone before we phase out 3G on our network. Good news! You’ve got options when it comes to replacing your phone.

@jamesmlewis85 Don’t worry, whatever you’re looking at is wrong. Someone else reported this also, they were told whatever diagnostics you can run from your account is giving that to everybody regardless of what phone they have. Just ignore it, it’s wrong.

Why did you remove the ability to switch between LTE and 4g (which is actually 3g plus) with the 15.1 IOS update? I understand the 3g network is gonna be shut down and you will improve the LTE network to make up for the poor reception in bad areas, but you haven’t shut it down yet. Why not leave the option to switch between the two until you actually shut it down.

@Zinsco

They are shutting off customers in batches, not all at once. So it has already started. By Feb 2022 all should be affected. Sorry but seems your batch just hit.

Going forward you must have a AT&T Voice over LTE (VoLTE) capable phone.
