NVG510 all lights green no conection

Greetings.

Having a problem now with our NVG510. Have not had any problems for alomst 2 years. On the 6mb service since funds are very limited. But, it started last week, All the lights are green, but, could not go any where. I read many having "similar" problems, however, none of what was preposed to fix or temp fix helped me what so ever. I am not new to this stuff by any means. I know I have old phone lines here, but, this is a big apartment building and I am not willing to shell out money to replace a line. Although, I have always gotten good connection even with those old lines. My download and upload speeds have always been just a tad over the service spes.. So I know I am not having line problems of such.

When the connection drops, the lights STAY solid green. I checked my router, but, it is working just fine, no problems with it. I moved mt computer cat5 to just the modem and yea, its there. Could not even reach the modems login page. To solve, temp, I have to unplug it from the power, wait a few seconds and plug it back in then once it reboots, its fine untill the connection drops once again. Happens about twice a day now. Was once a day.

When it reboots, I did go into diagnostic and of course, every thing checked out fine. "Naturally"

So, replace the modem at my own expence??? Not a rent type, HAD to buy the thing... If I have to buy another one, I will move to COX.. Have had COX before some timeback and no problems. Moved here, funds limited so had to settle for AT&T. As mentioned above, worked just fine for almost 2 years. Whats the deal people? Is this NVG510 a piece of cheap crud or what???

Hi @deployer,

Sorry about the issues you are still having. The 108.x.x.x is the IP address assigned by AT&T. You cannot change them. We dynamically assign you an IP address from our network.

When you do set your router to connect via DHCP, what IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway is it getting?

Hi David

As mentioned before, setting the routers IP, subnet and Gateway IP works
fine, with the old modem. Not with the new one since the IP is different
than with the old one. Subnet and Gateway are the same, but, the router
will not accept the IP of the new one. And yes, I know I can not change
those IP's, just wishful thinking.. I am by no means new to computers,
however, the IP configuration thing does tend to slow me a bit. What I can
not figure out is why the new modem has one IP and the old one has another.
And, why the modem does not say "Whoa, you cant have two different numbers
with this subnet mask" like my router does.Yea, that kind of thing still
puzzles me lol..

Anyway, since I hooked the old modem back into the system, it has worked
fine. Had one connection drop and since then, it has stayed connected. Yea,
electronics can be very fickle at times. But, my systems can get online
just fine through my router with the old modem anyway. So, I am going to
leave it up for now as I am getting a bit tired of trying to figure out why
my old one does work and hte new one does not since there is only that one
IP number difference.

AT&T should ask people if they need a router modem or just a straight
through modem. Those with routers would have a much better time of it if
the NVG510 worked a lot better or at least was able to configure more
normally like most routers and modems instead of having to hunt and peck
your way through the settings just to find, oooops, wont work. Yea, I have
read that a load of people are having problems with this particular
modem/router. I am not coming down on you or any of the other techs there.
I am saying that "AT&T" should have tested and or went with a different
setup on these modems before plugging the into there U-Verse system.. Yea,
I am not fond of this modem at all. Never have been, but at least I was
able to get the old one to communicate with my router.. AGain, this is not
a reflection on you or any of the other techs, but, it is a BIG reflection
on AT&T as a whole when they put out a device that has given so many so
much trouble.

Ok, done ranting I guess lol..

Take care David and let me know if you can think of some thing else, if not
within a couple more days, I will be sending the new modem back to you...
Sorry I am making it hard on ya...

Hi Dennis,

Hopefully, the old modem continues to work. I will keep my fingers crossed. But for the IP address assignment, it should be assigning a Private IP address of 192.168.1.x. If you are in passthrough mode, it will assign a public IP address, but just to test it for now, I would suggest sticking with the default configurations.

Let me know how it goes.

Yea, running passthrough mode, always have been. MY router assigns all the
192.168.x.x numbers. That why I wish I could just get a straight modem with
out built in router. For me, its much easier to work with. But yea, going
to stick with the old modem for now.

One question though, if I bought a new "modem only" will it still work
with the plan we have now, U-verse. Or is that some thing AT&T decided to
do for some reason. Only letting people use those, sorry, crud
modem/routers? If I could use a regular DSL modem, would make life easier.
lol

Thanks David, will be sending the new modem back in a day or two.

Hi @deployer,

With the way modems work, each one is designed to handle the modulation and demodulation of packets based off the encryption provided. There are no modems that you can buy in a store that will work with the U-verse services, and we do not have just a stand-alone modem available. I apologize for the inconveniences.

Do you have the IP addressing on the WAN interface of your router statically assigned, or is it getting the WAN IP address from the NVG510 via DHCP?

If it's statically assigned, it sounds like you have the wrong subnet mask on the WAN interface. Try using 255.255.248.0.

yea, kinda figured that much out. But, thought I would ask anyway to see if
other modems would work.. oh well...

Take care David and thanks for the help

Hi SomeJoe

Yea, I tried that already and it didn't work. Tried many different number combinations with the same results, including the 255.255.248.0

Just went ahead and hooked the old modem back up for now and will deal with the disconnects from time to time. So far, not sure why, but it has only disconnected once in the past two days. Before, it was at least twice a day. Not sure whats going on with it, but, so long as it continues on this path, its fine with me.

Thanks for the help though.

I have no network access! All lights are green. AT&T has been to my house about 6 times and it's still not working! Any ideas on how to fix it?
