Lumia 640 XL Windows 10 Release Date

I have a Lumia 640 XL with AT&T.  I am wondering when Windows 10 mobile will be released on it.  I have contacted Microsoft and they said it is up to the provider to release the update.  I have the Upgrade Advisor app and it says "Good news!  Yor phone is eligible for upgrade to Windows 10.  We are working with your mobile operator and phone manufacturer to make the upgrade available for your phone and you'll see a notification when it's ready".  I am wondering when Windows 10 Mobile will be released from AT&T for the Lumia 640 XL.  Thank you.

@dkcroftInstall the "Windows Inisder App", from your phone.
Then, check the "I agree" boxes, choose the Release Preview Ring.  At that point, you can go to Settings->Updates, and away you go, a new build is waiting.

If you like that RP build, and want to revert to only the released builds (typically monthly), go back into the app, and opt-out.  You can re-enter the program at any point, simply through the app.

Pretty darn easy, if you ask me...

Edit: ATTCares has now recommended this route for hte 640XL in this thread, which is close enough to an endorsement, for me: https://forums.att.com/t5/Windows-Phone/Windows-10-Upgrade-for-Lumia-640XL/m-p/4929372#M29102

Take the post for what you will, but you can either take my and their endoresements, or wait for things to start to deprecate...

If you search around here on this subject you'll see that AT&T doesn't pre-announce updates to any of their devices. So... you'll get no answer as to when this update will be avialable. You can jump into the WIndows Insider program and get the update now if you choose. If you need help with that, post your questions here and someone can assist you.

Hey there @craoxr!

Thanks for reaching out!

I know how exciting it is to be in-line for the Windows 10 update for your phone! It’s always awesome to be on the cutting edge of software!

Unfortunately, at the moment, we do not have an ETA for when this will be officially available!

Stay tuned, we’ll release information as it becomes available!

Thanks again for being part of the community! Have a magnificent day!

I have a 640 and that has already received the official release of windows 10 mobile. This is a-hat policy from att. If the lesser model can and ALREADY received the update directly from your att servers, then PLEASE flip the switch for the 640 XL

Hey @jrock1!

Sorry for the delay on that update! I know it can definitely be frustrating since the 640 is already capable of receiving it.

We would push it out to you if we were able, however these decisions are controlled by our software teams who work on their own internal schedule ironing out bugs and features before releasing updates onto the network.

My apologies again for the trouble, I hope you have an excellent day!

I'd suggest considering the Insider Program, but the "Release Preview Ring".
It's quite stable, and typically has a much better/current overall build than the AT&T W10m devices are getting, at most junctures.

Of course there are risks involved with self-updating your phone, but there's a recovery tool, in the event of a failure, which is rare.

Some services and apps are starting to be Win10m-dependent, so you will want to make the move sooner (than AT&T OTA update), if you begin to notice this with your apps, regardless, to avoid losing functionality.

I lost hope on AT&T. There is no reason why the software team cannot provide a worst case scenario release date to at least show the the general public who bought these 640 XL from AT&T stores promising these devices would be W10 upgraded. This amount of time to add AT&T bloatware is unacceptable. The more cynics might think with justified reason that AT&T is running out the clock as to encourage customers to buy phones. If Microsoft is serious about increasing the size of their smart phone pie slice of the market share, they need to adopt the same busyness model as Apple and dump AT&T.

@EEMene Take a look at my last post, where I refer to the one by ATTCares, it's eye-opening, and you have your answer, or at least as close as your'e going to get, and a "mostly endorsed" method to move forward.

I think it's time ATT replace the phone for free.  I shouldn't have to get an experimental update to get the promised update.
