USB on U-verse Box

I have an external hard drive that I keep my movies on that I have in digital form. I travel a lot so I keep them there incase I don't have wireless access.... I noticed the USB port on the box, but when I tried to plug it in to see what happened.... It froze everything including all the other TV's in the house (My box is the main box....)

is there a possibility of connecting my USB to the TV without taking up my laptop? What do you guys recommend?

Thank you ahead of time for any help.

I have a DVD player and would like to connect to my Vizio 47" smart TV.  I don't have any USB ports on the TV. I do have Apple TV hooked up. But that doesn't help. I see there is a USB port on the back of the ATT cable box. What's the best way to go at this point. I have a MAC with me as well.  Doesn't look like Vizio will allow mirroring (unless you use Chromecraft which I don't have. I guess this is where BetaMax comes into the VHS world?? Any ideas?

the USB port was a future enhancement that never panned out, so at this point it will only charge USB devices and if i recall for testing purposes at the manufacturer.
