I am getting a new receiver but have saved content on the old receiver/dvr. is there any way to recover this content.

For U-Verse, the content is saved on the DVR. A receiver is a separate box, smaller than the DVR, but with a similar appearance.
If you're replacing your DVR, the saved shows will be lost, but scheduled shows will remain scheduled. If replacing a receiver, the DVR will not be affected.
Either way, you'll have to go through and hide channels, re-do settings, etc.
