AT&T service not working for me.

I have Galaxy S9 with service through Comsumer Cellular. If I go to mobile network settings and set on 4G LTE, I can text and use data but cannot make or receive calls. If I switch to 3G only then I can make and receive calls but phone really slows down and can barely send a text with attachment.

If your phone was originally with a different service provider, you cannot use it on A T & T. I suspect Your solution is going to be that you should switch over to T- mobile

No, this is an AT&T phone. Comsumer Cellular is a reseller and uses AT&T for service. I been using this phone for 2 years now. No problem until now. My wife has S9+ and having same issues.

Rich,

We suddenly had this problem with several of our phones and I found a solution today.

Here's what worked for us:

Enter the following code into your phone keypad (like you're making a call): *#*#4636#*#*

Once a menu appears, select "Phone Information"

Go to "Set Preferred Network Provider"

Select one of the following if available:

GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL) (this is the best option)

   GSM Auto (PRL)

   Global Auto (PRL)

Wait about 30 seconds and exit the screen

The ability to make and receive calls returned which each of the codes, however the bottom two codes resulted in slower (non-LTE) data (but the top code isn't available on all phones).

FYI... all of our phones are unlocked Motorola phones which are on the list of HD Voice capable phones.  Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply. Looks like my phone is one that doesn't have that exact setting.

Hey there @rich3222, we understand that you are unable to send and receive calls from your Galaxy S9. Let's see if we can get a resolution for you!

On February 22, 2022, AT&T phased out 3G network.

If your phone is an AT&T device, and is on the approved list, it requires a software update to work on our network after the 3G shutdown. To update your device software, swipe down the Notification bar>Settings>Software update>Check for updates.

Please review how to find model numbers on your device, to verify that it is on our compatible list.  If your phone is listed as a compatible device, you may need to get a new SIM card to refresh your signal.

Will my phone automatically work if it supports HD Voice? Your phone will work if the HD Voice feature is on. If you can't make, or receive calls or you're having trouble accessing data, check the VOLTE or LTE status of your phone.

Here's how:

  • iPhone 7 and above: Go to Settings, then General, and lastly Software update. Select Download and install to update to the most current software version.
  • iPhone 6: Go to Settings, then Cellular, and then Cellular data options. Choose Enable LTE then select Voice and Data and turn on LTE.
  • Android: Go to Settings and then Connection. Choose Mobile networks and then Enhanced LTE services and select On.

Please let us know if this helped to clear things up! Thank you for contacting our AT&T Community Forums.

@rich3222 Hello

I won't pretend to be an expert or anything here. My experience lies in dealing with trying to get international devices purchased from third-party vendors such as Amazon and eBay compatible with AT&T and other carriers.

Unfortunately...what @formerlyknownas @ATTHelp  have told you might be correct in your case.

Although your phone may have used AT&T towers through Consumer Cellular... it might not be compatible with the towers anymore due to network changes... according to AT&T.

AT&T created two separate whitelist... one of phones that At&t sells or branded phones...and the second list is unlocked carrier free and direct from the manufacturer phones.

AT&T claims that if your device isn't on either of those lists..not just the model name...such as the Samsung Galaxy S9... but the exact same model number ... it won't be compatible.

This is due to the device using 3G for making calls... and/or not having or being compatible with HD Voice... a feature that At&t claims is necessary for making a device work with the network.

According to At&t... the network changes are due to 3G shutdown/5G upgrade and the FCC requirement for devices to be able to be located on a e-911 call.

Although both are true.. it appears...at least at this point... At&t may have taken extra steps by placing additional requirements for network compatibility beyond the requirements and upgrades.

However... until all the major carriers complete the 3G shutdown...At&t March 31-April 1, T-Mobile June 30-July 1, and Verizon December 31... there's no way of knowing for certain.

So if you were to take your device to any of those networks... you might run into the same problem now or in the future.

Companies like Consumer Cellular and one I have personal experience dealing with, Straight Talk, are known as MVNO... or Mobile Virtual Network Operators. They essentially lease the use of the towers from the major carriers.

This means that they may not have any way of doing anything about changes to the network by the major carriers. Although many people who post here say that they are able to.

In my experience with Straight Talk... they were not... and the two devices that were on the account were taken to T-Mobile.

@rich3222 As for your phone itself... here's the information I have found on the specs for the Samsung Galaxy S9.

I use this website for information on phones before buying them.

According to the information listed below...all variants of the Galaxy S9... including the five manufactured for use in the US... are VoLTE and HD Voice capable.

However... that doesn't mean for certain that the device is compatible with AT&T... or any other carriers.

T-Mobile and Verizon have a way to check compatibility on their website.. At&t doesn't.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, I really appreciate all the info you have here. According to AT&T site my S9 needs a software update to work now. Checking the phone for updates it says it is up to date and none available. Oh well !!

@rich3222 I appreciate your response

And I think (my opinion) that's because it isn't a software update issue.

VoLTE and HD Voice feature will more than likely work on your phone...but At&t doesn't allow it to work with the network.

For whatever reason... it appears that they have taken extra steps by placing additional requirements for network compatibility beyond the 3G shutdown and FCC requirement for devices to be able to be located on a e-911 call.

In doing so, international phones, some unlocked phones, and phones from other carriers won't be allowed to be compatible.

At&t will claim that your device still uses 3G for calls... isn't VoLTE capable... doesn't have or use the HD Voice feature... when all it actually may ... and I stress the word may... boil down to is At&t has used this as cover to remove phones they don't want from the network.

I have two international phones... (don't use them personally, but purchased them for family members) that are not, nor ever have been on either AT&T whitelist... are 4G/LTE capable... used VoLTE for calls on the network prior to Feb 22... one of which was cutoff the network... but as of right now... both are fully functional with the network... using HD Voice to make calls.

I am waiting to see if they are able to remain compatible with the network after the last proposed 3G shutdown date of March 31-April 1.
