remote access to router

Hello - I am a network guy. I can't imagine that I cannot open up the router for remote access / management... why? please don't say security.... there are too many ways, that if this was the concern, you could use double authentication, etc., etc.... please advise - i mean really, your ATT, you can figure out how to provide this & provide security.

Perhaps I just missed it in the interface?

You cannot remote administer the AT&T Gateway. Reason:  Security.

Your options would be to set up a VPN server in your network and bounce off of that to get to the Gateway's administration page.

If you have the Arris NVG589 or NVG599 RG it is possible and real simple to set up. Just log into your gateway using 192.168.1.254. Once you're there select Remote Access on the top menu, enter your RG's Access Code and from there it gives you the option to setup. The user name will be tech and you will need to create a password. Select what type of access you need, and then click on Enable Remote Access. Once enabled, the RG will give you a Access URL that you will use to access your gateway remotely. When you type in the Access URL from a remote location it will go to a page where you will enter the user name and password. User name will be tech. Password will be the one you created. Once in, if you chose Update Access as the access type it will look just like you were logged in at home. I use this feature all of the time to log into my router which is an Arris NVG599 as well as my parents router. They have the Arris NVG589. Hope this helps.

I did this and it works. I would like to get to a NAS device on my network. Do you know what I need to do to connect to it?

I'll be danged.  The 2WIREs didn't have it, and I thought it was disabled in the AT&T version of the Arris boxes, but there it is.

I'm not going to enable it, mind you.

I'm curious how he discovered that "magic" user name ("tech").

It shows up on the page.  Unfortunate that it isn't changeable.

You know I was watching a podcast the other day about the 599 modem and what they were saying what was so bad about it was that when they do hack into whatever it is that they use the username Tech but as I remember it you didn't put in a password you left the password blank I will look later and see what podcast that was that I seen that said this and I will reply it back but they gave out almost like step to step instructions on how the hackers were doing it which pretty much meant you know there was some crazy people at home sitting trying it out listening to it who knows it might still work but I'll check out the name of it and I'll post it on here as soon as I can and you can check it out
