why do new customers get better prices than loyal customers

I called att and pretended to be a new customer and I was able to get the current plan I have for almost $30 less. This is not a promotion either, just one line and all the same options. $30 difference per month. I tried to talk to customer service to ask if they could offer me a discount, and all I got was "can't help you" and some attitude. They even agreed that the only way to get a lower rate was to switch carriers. Wow! Been a loyal customer for nine years, but any joe off the street can walk in there and get the same plan I have for $30 less. Ridiculous. And yes, I'm writing this in the hopes that someone who cares and works for att will read this and try to keep me as a customer. Or else I'm gone.

I too am a years loyal customer and probably the short answer is that most of the deals originate through the Sales Department to increase user base and profit margin. It really is like that pretty much everywhere. If you are already a customer, they "have you" and tend to focus on new sales. Sometimes it is forgotten that current customers could become former customers if they feel they aren't getting a good or fair deal. Also, Sales and Retention Specialists are given a little more options when making deals with current customers, moreso than the average Customer Service Representative.

Personally, I'm not  believing this. In my experience with wireless service, any plan and pricing available to a new customer is also available to existing customers.

Believe me, Verizon customers have the same complaint; better deals for new customers, nothing for existing customers. Check out their forums and you'll find the exact same problems, questions, and issues.

(I was a Verizon customer up until November)

New customers may get bill credits.  However, there may have been confusion regarding how much (if any) of a discount you get for paying for your device in full (or AT&T Next) vs. getting a subsidized price on your device.  If you are on a 2 year service agreement initiated after 2014, then you will NOT get that discount until your two year commitment is up (after which it should automatically start to appear on your bill).  That is true regardless of if youre a new customer or not.  I have never been treated worse than a customer who is new.  I've been with AT&T since 2010.

Nonsense, for both carriers.

I was a Verizon customer for 20 years and with AT&T now for under one year. My sister has been with AT&T for as long as she can remember.
She has been switched her family over to the mobile share plan, as each phone comes off contract. She started the switch after I left Verizon. We don't live in the same town, or shop the same store and she is getting the same price I am. We all purchased out phones at full retail to get the low monthly bill.

I suspect you are not making a valid comparison and are probably on an outdated plan.

Keep in mind, a new customer may have to buy a phone, as I did. That may not be in your calculations.

The one benefit I did get as a new customer, is a bonus for each line I ported from another carrier, that is not offered to current AT&T customers.

I suggest you back up you comment with facts and figures, not heresay.

These comments are great but not one of them is from the company, so lets hear from them.

This is a community forum, not ATT advertising or "News room".

The OP could probably save $30 just by switching to a current plan.  Data prices come down all the time.

Keep in mind ATT offers promotions to being in new business and they seem like a pretty good bargain.  But it's all designed to make a PROFIT for ATT.  Think about it.
