Never Credited For New iPhone7

Back in December 2016 I signed up for a 2 year contract with Direct TV. Part of the reason I signed up was because I was offered a new iPhone7 at no charge. Actually, I was charged taxes at the time - around $60. Since that time I have checked back with ATT multiple times regarding the 'credit' that was supposed to come through on my wireless bill. The first time I called, no biggie, the credit will come through in a few months. When it didn't I called again. This time half the operators I spoke with said I didn't qualify for the credit. Finally I got through to a 'Specialist' who reassured me it should be coming through in the next billing cycle. Guess what? I have now paid 5 of 30 installment payments for a phone I was told was 'free'. What is one supposed to do in this situation? If the credit doesn't come through, I will be returning the 'free' phone. P.S. Direct TV uses 3rd party vendors to sell packages. An ATT operator told me this and gave me the name of the company that sold me the package. There has been multiple finger pointing between ATT & DirectTV this entire time. I've never been so disappointed in a customer service experience.

ATT does not use contracts any more.  If you agreed to a 24 month payment plan, it is on the phone only.

Credits take 2-3 bill periods as long as your account remains in good standing.

The offer required Direct TV satellite service and a port in from a competing carrier.

Did you get Direct TV?   What carrier did you switch from?

Yep, I heard the same thing from ATT. I did sign up for DirectTV, 24 mo contract. I was never told I had to port in a new number. Never. I was already an existing ATT customer. This is a complete failure on my part for not getting anything in writing, and a complete failure on ATT & DirectTV for having a 3rd party give away 'free' iPhones for a 24 mo contract.

Question: I paid taxes on my 'free' phone in December. I was told this is the only thing I would have to pay for. The charge for the phone came through later. It's been over 3 billing cycles and I haven't seen a credit.

Just FYI, the name of the 3rd party is Clearlink. They said multiple times I had to do nothing besides sign a 2 year contract with DirectTV. Was it possible the rep was misinformed? Perhaps. But I bet if the call was recorded ATT could have proof I was guaranteed a new phone.

I've been a loyal ATT customer for almost 20 years. My account is in good standing because I was told by an ATT supervisor to keep paying my full bill so my account didn't go into default.

Here are some key dates:

dec 2016 - paid $52 in taxes for my 'free' phone. This was NOT paid through my ATT bill.

1/27/17 - spoke with an ATT supervisor named Mary who documented my entire story and was told it would be sent to fraud and I would be contacted in 4-5 business days. Never happened.

2/4/17 - spoke with fraud who said it wasn't a fraud issue and my complaint never got sent to them.

then spoke to Customer Sevice who sent me to 'Specialty Services'. Specialty Sevices tol me the credit takes 2-3 billing cycles and would come through. We just got our 3rd billing cycle bill with no credi.

The commercial does say, "switched to AT&T..."

So does the offer.   Very clear it must be ported in from a competing carrier

There is no resolution.  You did not qualify, so will not receive credits.   Not fraud.

You can complain anywhere to any agency, it won't matter.    ATT will just show the offer and that you did not qualify.   There was no paperwork to fill out to get this, requirements are checked by the computer.

I'm sure ATT will be polite and keep submitting tickets, rather than tell you the truth.

I appreciate your feedback.

The advertisement was from a flier that came in the mail. Perhaps they had the 'ported over' in small print? Talk about deceptive advertising if that's the case.

I would have never signed up if the free phone wasn't offered.

Regardless, I still have my old phone. Do you know if I can return the 7 and get a credit?

Thanks again.

You have only 14 days to return a phone.  You must be way past that.  You can sell it and use the cash to pay off Next.

It was in the fine print, but still clearly says, must port from eligible carrier, specifically excludes Cricket and other ATT owned companies.
