help me! Blacklisted Phone

ok so i bought a motorola X for AT&T on craigslist, i got it unlocked and the ESN was Clean i used it on Tmobile. yesterday i found a sim card. so i inserted it on my Moto X and the Line was activated it had service and all, it was a florida area code, i did saved the number,

well i let it sit for about 5 hours waiting for a call or text from the owner, i though maybe i could return it, but the next day i turned on my phone and my Tmobile sim card never found network, so i tried the AT&T one and i tried to see if it still had service and it didnt,,, a message plays saying the Device has been block and cannot be used with AT&T

so i checked on swappa my ESN and it says its Blacklisted,,,,it was reported lost or stolen!!

now the phone is useless! only for the mistake i made of inserting the Sim card i found on my phone!

Hello Community,

Although this is an older thread, we still see a lot of customers that are viewing this content.  To better assist everyone, we wanted to take a moment to clarify the error message and what you can do to resolve it.

Error We're sorry, but this device is blocked from network use. Please contact your wireless service provider.

Meaning - The device has been blocked due to being reported lost or stolen.

Solution

  • Only the account holder can request to remove the device from being blocked.
  • Request to remove the device from being blocked can only be initiated with the carrier that blocked the device.
  • Removing from the blocked list may take up to 30 minutes for the device to be unblocked on the AT&T Network and up to 24 hours for other carriers.
  • If also restoring service from suspend, if the customer plans to use the blocked device, the device must be removed from the blocked list first.

If you have lost your phone, or fear it is stolen, you can find all the information you will need on locating it, and other next steps, on our Lost and Stolen device article.

Thanks

I know it won't solve your problem, but it is also quite possible that the phone you bought from Craigs List was also a stolen device, and the original owner finally reported it as such, thus causing it to be blacklisted, not because you pur someone else's SIM it your phone, but because it wasn't owned by the person who sold it on Craigs List.  Another possibility that I have heard others mention that has happened to them is that the person who sold the phone on Craigs List did own the phone, but they later reported it as "stolen" in order to get their insurance to give them a "free replacement".  In this case, they were trying to scam their insurance company, but the insurance company took the extra step to make sure that such a scam wouldn't work by having the phone blacklisted as stolen.

There are a number of possible causes for the phone to be blacklisted.  Right now, about the best you can hope for is contacting the seller on Craigs List and having them report that the phone has been recovered and to remove it from the blacklist.  If they can't or won't then there is a good chance that you have found the reason for your blacklisting.  At that point, I would suggest that you take the information to the police and let them investigate the person who sold you "stolen merchandise".

thanks for the reply. i happend to never delete my texts so i have his texts when i was talking with him about the phone and all, and today that same seller offered me a tablet for sale, so when i found out it was blacklisted i sent him a text asking him why he sold me a lost or stolen phone, and his reply was "i aint sell you nothing bro wrong number" that makes me think he did stole it and i do have his adress its an appartment where he lives i will contact the police..

i was wanting to sell it for cheap but its the same thing his doing... selling stolen phones

I would call the seller to let him know the situation and take my money back.

It seems like Craigs List is a major case of "Buyer beware." AFAIK, there's no way to leave feedback for sellers like there is on eBay. Plus, when you buy through eBay, you pay by credit card which is a great way to dispute transactions. With Craigs List, it seems like a lot of it is cash only.

Hi I want to purchase the att phone from craigslist. The seller is showing the original unlock email he received from the att to unlock that device. However, when I check the status of the device on imeiinfo.com is says "Unknown" under blacklisted status. I dont know the meaning of that. I do not have att account. I use t-mobile service. Is there any way for me to know either that device is reported lost or stolen??

No.  The phone could be reported after the sale to you.  We do not recommend buying off CL as you have no recourse.

Swappa and eBay guarantee your purchase be as advertised.

I found an iPhone 4 years ago and failed to locate the owner even though I tried. I broke my current phone and thought maybe I could unlock the phone and use it on my account which is T-Mobile. Apparently the phone has been Blacklisted as Lost or Stolen! I found it in the middle of the street like I said 4 years ago. Is it possible to get it Un-Blacklisted?

Well, yeah, if you found something in the middle of the street, there's a good (almost 100%) chance someone lost it. Just because they lost it several years ago doesn't make it any less lost to the original owner.
