Keep att as backup

I got deal through my company at verizon wireless.  But I want to keep my att account open till end of the contract.  I want to port my number over to verizon wireless, but keep att account open.

 . . . No.

If a number on your account is ported out, it is cancelled automatically., and you then become responisble for the fees. Once that happens, the only way to reverse it is to port it back.

Now if you have multiple lines, then only the line(s) being ported cancel, the rest stay active, just like before.

I can add a line to my account, just buy a basic phone.  I can port out my current number.

NO. the contract is connected to the number. If you port it out, you are responsible for the early termination fee. There is no way around it.
Your best bet would be to get a new number with Verizon and keep your AT&T account active until the contract expires. Then port the number to Verizon. You can set your AT&T phone to forward to the Verizon phone that way you don't have to give out your new number.
