Old contract...new phone

My contract should be up around December. I wanna buy a new phone, this one has alot of damage but....how will that work since Im still under contract?
(Was going to pay cash for new phone so it doesnt effect my bill) Will it just stay the same every month and new contract added on to the back of the old one?

If you buy a phone outright, it does not affect your current contract and once your current contract expires, you go month to month.

Contracts are only required for subsidized phones and AT&T no longer subsidizes phone costs. There are no more contracts. The only obligations are for phone purchases under the NEXT plan which is an interest free phone purchase plan.
