converting to pay as you go

i have a phone that was recently on a service plan. the service has ended. can it be used as a pay as you go phone?

You keep your number, but the phone need a different SIM card.

thanks. so will i have to take it to a store to have it changed? also will my number be reactivated or will i get a new number?
