Device Software Update: Samsung Galaxy S5 Active (SM-G870A)

I have a used unlocked S5A that I'd like to upgrade to marshmallow. I purchased a prepaid talk and text plan and sim which is activated and paid for. Requests to update the software are still met with "your software is up to date". It's at 5.1.1. Do I have to be in an area of the US with an active phone connection as well as a wireless data connection. My plan has no data. I live in Canada. I have a cottage in Point Roberts which has a very weak ATT cell service although it is OK for messaging.  I thought I knew what the base requirements are for updating. What am I missing?

I'm assuming you have a model G870A which is exclusive to AT&T. It can only
be updated by AT&T. You need to buy a sim and plan from AT&T. If it's an
unlocked phone and you don't plan to use the phone with AT&T as your
service provider, just buy one month of a minimum month to month plan. I
don't think you need to include data in the plan but I'm not sure. It's a
very large download so you need a half decent wifi connection.

You need to be in the USA
Connected to the AT&T network
With an active plan
With a sim activated on the phone you want to update
And have a wifi internet connection.

You can't use someone else's sim card. Hope this helps
