Very weak signal strength on new phone? Why?

Okay.  I have had my new Sony Xperia Z3 for a while now and I love everything about the phone, accept for the reception quality.  I am on AT&T and I travel in the same area routinly and I always had great reception in my normal travel area with my old Sony Xperia V.  At my home I always had 4 to 5 bars of signal.  My new Z3 never gets more then 1 bar, if any.  I almost never had dropped calls on my V no matter where I went. My Z3 drops calls all the time.  My mom lives 150 miles away and I go to visit her at least twice a month.  Many times I have driven the entire way while talking on my old Xperia V phone and never had a dropped call.  I have been to her house several times since I got this Z3 and I have no signal about 80% of the time.  I could not make a call if my life depended on it in areas where I never had a signal problem with my Xperia V.

At first I thought that the problem was that my V was using 3G towers and my new Z3 is using 4G towers.  But I swtiched my Z3 to 3G only and it still has not signal in areas where my V used to have 4 to 5 bars, so that is not the problem either.

As far as specs go, the Z3 (D6603) has all the same bands that the V has and more.   The Z3 works on all the following 3G and 4G bands.

3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 13(700), 17(700), 20(800)

These are the bands the Xperia V operates on:

3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100

4G bands LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 20(800)

So what is the problem here?  Why is the reception so bad on the Z3?

Hi @johnhoward!

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having such trouble with that Sony Xperia Z3! I can totally understand how frustrating that can be with having such limited service when trying to use your phone, especially when traveling long distances and need to remain in contact with your friends and family! Let’s take a look into this and see what might be causing this issue!

When did you notice you started having trouble, was it since getting the device? Does it happen regardless of location (i.e. home, work, traveling, etc.)? Are you noticing if anyone in the area with AT&T services having connection troubles as well?

You can bring your own phone to AT&T if your device works on one of these GSM network frequencies:

  • 3G UMTS/4G HSDPA+ network - 850/1900MHz bands
  • 4G LTE network - AWS/700/850/1900MHz bands

I can recommend checking on the APN settings before continuing with troubleshooting. To check that, please visit the online article on how to change.

Have you had the chance to confirm that the SIM card in the phone has been provisioned correctly on the account? You can contact us directly or get a new one activated any time free of charge at an AT&T Corporate store.

As a last resort, if it is multiple devices having service issues, you can submit feedback and help our network engineers pinpoint any weak tower issues or possible network interruptions by pinpointing your location through our AT&T Mark the Spot app. To install on your device, you can do so on any smartphone platform by clicking on the link below:

Let me know how it goes! Take care and have a great rest of your week!

All the bands you listed are listed in my original post, so the obvious answer to your question about whether my phone works on those bands was answered before you asked that question (If you would have taken the time to read my very informitave post).

Second, I went to the AT&T store to get a new sims for this phones so, yes, it is PROVISIONED.

Third, as desicribed in my original post, this has been happening since I got this phone.  Also, as discribed in my original post, I do not have this problem on my other phone which is a Sony Xperia V model that operates on the same bands as my new phone.

Fourth, I contacted AT&T on multiple occassions and have entered the APN settings they gave me and have confirmed that they are correct and match the ones on the link you gave me.

Fifth, I would very much appreciate it, if you would actually read what I wrote in my original post before responding and try to use that information to help you get a better idea of what avenues you want me to try to fix this problem.  For instance.  If one phone that operates on the same bands has great reception, but another phone that operates on those same bands has poor reception, a logical intelligent person would then understand that the BANDS the phones operate on are not the problem.  It's called "Deductive Reasoning", give it a try.

Not trying to be insulting here, but I find it very insulting to me when I do my best to post a very informative questions with lots of details and the responder completely ignors everything I took time to write and tells me to check things I already covered.  I find that EXTREMELY insulting and offensive and I am just freaking tierd of these kinds of lazy people that roam forums trying to make themselves feel better by pretending that they are being helpful while completely deregarding what a person says and offering no constructive advice.
