Moving router-getting the runaround

I have been an at&t internet customer for over 6 years. I have been lied to, misled, and hassled by having to make multiple phone calls for multiple issues and I need a resolution.

I phoned about two weeks ago to ask to have a tech come and move my router to a different room in my house because there is not enough signal to cover it. Have asked about this various times and was told as recent as January it would cost $55. I thought that was ridiculous, but eventually caved after finishing my basement and not having signal down there. So I went to call to have this done (yes, 8 months since I last asked) and after wasting an hour plus of my work day, being dropped twice and told multiple things, I was told it would now be$149.

Needless to say, I'm extremely frustrated.

I was also told someone would call me later that day to see other options and that didn't happen.

So now I need to know my options...any suggestions?

I appreciate your response. My frustration is that I have talked to them
multiple times over the years for various things and I would end up asking
about the cost to move the router and they always said $55, like I said, as
recent as January.

I get it, there is a charge to it, which is more than I am willing to pay,
but I am also very frustrated with the calls I make, being re-routed, being
told to call another number and then this most recent time when I asked for
supervisor, that supervisor said to me that he would call me at a specific
time that evening and I heard nothing.

I also don't live in a large house and the fact that my speed has decreased
over time (until I upped it this past January) and right now, to reach my
basement, I have it strung across my son's room (was our office during the
original install six years ago) and out into a hallway. Then it works in
my basement, but I don't want cords strung everywhere. In my mind, when I
have called about this, I have had the same router the entire time and
maybe they should give me a better router. Anytime I search for Wifi on
one of my devices I can pick up at least my two next door neighbors' (who
have had AT&T over time and I believe have both switched) yet I can't get
reliable wifi from my 2nd floor to my basement.

Again, I'm not paying them $200+ to come out and give me better equipment.
I'm not unwilling to pay something, but I think that price is steep when I
have been a fairly long term customer. Its another instance where these
large companies reward new, inconsistent customers and put the cost back on
those with loyalty.

Bottom line for me at this point is I have to spend time researching my
other options again. The hassle over the phone calls is enough to justify
that in my mind. I know that I am somewhat stuck with what I have since I
am also a DirecTV customer as well, but again, these problems are enough
for me to consider switching everything entirely. There has to be some
consideration for the fact that at $200+ to come and do something that
should be fairly simple (new router or relocation), it probably wouldn't
cost me a whole lot more to just opt out of both contracts, and I am sure
DirecTV would have something to say for losing a customer because the
internet provider won't show a more respect for loyal customers.

Google Fiber is being dropped in my area soon, so that is a new option I
will have to consider.

Forget calling a tech and use the money to buy your own AC or N speed router. Signal strengh will penetrate walls better than G. A good investment since you can use it with whomever your service provider will be in the future.
