Porting an AT&T number from regular service to a go phone.

Yesterday I purchased an AT&T go phone. I activated it and set up my account. It gave me a new number and didn't give me an option to port my existing number. When I called customer service I was told I needed to go into a store to do this. So I drove to the AT&T store, told them what I wanted, was helped by a really nice associate who assured me he fixed my issue and went home. Later last night, I realized he changed my sim card and just put my new phone onto my existing cellular service. So I have no idea how to get my phone back to the go phone service and how to keep my phone number that I've had for years. Help!

Hello there @JenniferBSmith,

Switching from prepaid to postpaid is a great alternative if you’re looking to change it up, and find something which better fits your needs. It can be a confusing process, so I can understand the concern when needing to know everything there is about the transfer! I would be delighted to share some information in order to reach a resolution!

Since you already created a GoPhone account, I would recommend letting it lapse and create a new one with your freshly ported number. I do apologize for any misinformation from the store you visited, but in order to port the number on your postpaid account, you will need to visit an AT&T Company store. If you found the store you previously visited was not helpful, I would recommend visiting another. You can find one with our Store Locator.

Only the account holder can process a migration to a prepaid account, and your postpaid line cannot have an active AT&T Next Installment plan. This will need to be paid off prior to porting.

I hope you found this informative, and you’re able to get your number ported over successfully. Have a beautiful day!
