Tethering/mobile AP is unavailable.... since update Jan 2018

I have a Samsung Note 5 and since I did a system update 2 weeks ago I can no longer use my hotspot. It gives me a message saying "Tethering/Mobile AP is unavailable a network issue may he preventing use of mobile data contact 611" please help. I know it's not the area or anything because my friend is using his hotspot right beside me in same house

Hello @Majors74!

Forgive the delay in response; we’ve been extremely busy in our Community Forums lately. I’m sorry to hear about your hotspot connectivity issue. Are you still having a tough time getting your hotspot to connect?

I would recommend our Troubleshoot & Resolve page where you can select your device and then choose Hotspots and it will guide you through some steps to help resolve your issue.

I appreciate you reaching out to us here. We do want to assist with any issues you may have.

I had this same problem for past couple of months. Spent an hour with att phone customer service resetting stuff. They also tried to remote in several times vut couldnt stay connected.  They told me to take it to an att store. Did that today and they tried a new sim card. No luck. Hooked it up to some machine and couldn't find anything wrong. It's not my plan, I have another phone that it works on. Just no longer on my note 5. Last option is complete phone reset which I am not willing to do since there is no guarantee that will fix it.

@Rjhermans @Majors74

Are your Note 5 phones AT&T branded or did you get more generic unlocked models?

Hotspot often requires AT&T branded phones (except iPhones, Pixel 2 and maybe a few others).

The fact that it was working previously might have been incorrectly/accidentally working.

Call AT&T and make sure they have the right IMEI and it's provisioned correctly.

They'll probably tell you to reboot, so don't call from that phone if you want to check while you're on the phone.

Hope this helps someone else. I just kept looking for apps and additional
settings to turn off and turn back on and it's now working.
In Mobile and network settings I turned off mobile data and any other
setting that could be off and back on and it's working now. Definitely the
phone. I also reset the network 3 more times.

I just booted into safe mode (When you see Samsung Galaxy Note 5 on screen, let go of Power and press and hold the Volume down key. Keep holding it until the Note 5 starts up and you should see safe mode at the bottom left of the screen.).  Then I went into reset networks. I reset them, and then mobile hotspot worked.  I just restarted the phone, and mobile hotspots still worked. Have no idea why that worked.

Go to your access point names in connections mobile networks then select your APN that's accessible from here you should be on your APN configuration page. Near the bottom is a category called Mobile Virtual Network Operator Type. Change the valve of this to IMSI
