Call and text forwarding when using different company sim card for travel

I am going to be travelling to Toronto, Canada, for a month and am considering using T-Mobile pre-paid plan which has way more data, talk and text than At&T offers for a much better price.  I want to be able to have my AT&T phone number forwarded to the new number I'll receive when I buy the pre-paid service with T-Mobile PLUS would like to have texting forwarded as well.  I want to use my own phone and not have to deal with two phones.

Quesiton 1) Since I've never done something like this before, am I correct that call forwarding will work fine if I take my current sim card out of my phone and use the T-Mobile sim card in it's place for the month I'm gone?  I'd prefer to use my own phone and not have to purchase a new phone for the trip.

Quesiton 2) Does anyone know if it's possible to have my texts forwarded to a different phone number...same as the call forwarding mentioned above? If so, how would I do this?  An App?

Thanks for whatever suggestions you have.

Hi there @camanomomof3!

This is an excellent inquiry, which I will be glad to further assist you with now! You are on the right track for wanting to answer all questions before your travels.

You may use your own phone with a different SIM card, but you will want to ensure the phone is unlocked from our network. To unlock your device, this will ensure you can use your AT&T branded phone with a different carrier. To unlock your phone, you can submit a request here.

Depending on your make and model phone, you can normally forward calls through your settings. To further learn how to do so, you can click here. Select you make and model phone, then click on “View all Tutorials” to get started.

In regards to forwarding text messages, this feature is not available to send your standard messages to your phone number to an alternate number. I apologize about this inconvenience. However, I would highly suggest signing up for AT&T Messages Backup & Sync. This allows you to view and text online from any PC. To sign up and learn more, click here.

I hope this helps you out, and I wish you the best on your travels! Have a good weekend!
