How to Add Contacts to BlackBerry Messenger?

I have a BlackBerry Curve 8310 and I am wondering how I would be able to add contacts to my BlackBerry Messenger list.

If the contacts have BlackBerries, you can add them by email address or PIN. Open Messenger, press the menu button and select Add Contact.

Thanks for the information.  How would I get the person's PIN in order to add them?
