Remove sim card, clean it and reinsert it. If it still does not work, go to an AT&T store to get a new sim card. Stay there get the problem resolved before leaving the store.

As @tim horton taking the SIM out and reinserting it usually will fix a SIM card error. If the phone is an upgrade or insurance replacement the SIM number will need to be updated in our system. If it is not a new SIM then please visit a corporate store for a replacement.
Please use our Store Locator to find the store closest to you as well as make an appointment! The Corporate stores are indicated by a different colored map pin color. Authorized retailers usually have SIM cards as well but they may charge a fee.
