Only if you have backed them up somewhere. Android doesn't have a recycle bin or any fail-safe when stuff is deleted. It's gone forever once that delete button gets pressed.
Check Google Photos and see if they may be backed up. http://photos.google.com
SD card in phone maybe? Have you ever synced with Smart Switch on a PC or Mac?

Never synced, not recently backed up. Wondering if there's a way to restore without rooting the phone. Running Marshmallow.

There gone. Rooting the phone is not going to bring your photos back. That area of the phone is over writing itself if you keep using the phone. The chances of getting your picks back are slim to none. Thats why I always tell family google photos for back up since its really free for unlimited storage of 14mp or lower photos.
