Activate old AT&T device

My friend gave me her old Samsung galaxy s7edge, and I would like to activate it on a prepaid plan. My question is do I have to buy a new SIM card? The SIM that is currently in the phone was an old AT&T account, but it wasn't a prepaid account. Are they interchangeable between both types of plans?

If a SIM is active it may be possible to switch between account types without replacing the sim, although I'm not 100% sure. However once the SIM becomes inactive that's it for the SIM. So in your case you definitely need to get a new SIM.
