I do not receive short code text messages on an AT&T Prepaid number

Hi,

I have an AT&T prepaid number, I have never been able to receive short code text messages on this number. For example, I use discover bank and never receive a text from them for 2-factor authentication purposes, but I do receive texts from full numbers. To circumvent this issue I tried to see if it was the bank's fault so I got a google voice number and made it forward the texts to me, which I did receive from google voice because google voice uses an actual 10-digit phone number for text forwarding. I called AT&T customer support and unfortunately, she was unable to help at all. She didn't understand what a short-code text message is and asked me to talk to my bank when I explained to her that the bank is just an example, and I don't receive them from anywhere. Any help would really be appreciated!

EDIT: I did want to add, that I looked at other forum posts, and I do receive them from AT&T's star codes, but I do not receive them from anyone other than AT&T like Discover Bank, Microsoft, Facebook, FedEx. I tried a bunch of them from here https://usshortcodedirectory.com/directory/

and none of them worked

EDIT2: I also wanted to add that I put my sim card in a friends phone and it didn't work, even though he uses AT&T as well, and he receives them just fine, so I do not think it is an issue with my device, I think it is an issue on AT&T's end.

Thanks

Hi @srastogi,

We'd love to help! Considering you're able to receive the Star Codes, it's odd that you don't receive codes from other companies. What type of device do you have, and is it updated with the latest software? The Directory page also has a page dedicated to why you may not be receiving short code messages. Give this a look and see if anything sticks out to you. Let us know if this helps!

Hi Collin,

Thank you for replying, my device is an HTC 10 and it is up to date with software. I think the device is irrelevant because I tried to see if I could get short code messages by using a friend's device as well, which didn't work either. Does AT&T prepaid have short code messages disabled or something? If yes, then I would like to know how to activate them, if not, then I have already looked at that link you posted by finding other forum posts with similar problems. I do receive texts when I use the star codes, but the short codes in the directory linked above do not work for me, granted I have not tried all of them, but all that I did try did not work. Is there some way to resolve this? The technical support agent I spoke to on the phone didn't know what a short code message was, and asked me to contact my bank, which is not the issue because I had them send the messages to my google voice number, which have been received without fail every time.

Thanks,

Hi @srastogi,

Thank you for providing this additional information. You mentioned trying some of the short codes in the directory. Were you texting "Help" to see if you would receive a return SMS with instructions on how to opt into receiving messages? If this still didn't help, there is likely something on your device stopping you from receiving SMS messages in the form of short codes.

We'll need to take this a step further, so I will be sending you a private message. Be sure to check your forums inbox for further discussion. Thank you!

Hi Collin,

Just replying here as well (even though I did receive your private message, I appreciate that a lot) I did try texting the word 'Help' and 'HELP' but never received anything back.

Thanks,
