How do I improve my Internet speed? It has been getting slower than before

Incredibly slow internet speed. Tested 5 times and the download speed was about .17 MBPS and upload of about 1.15. The modem/router is about 6 years old. Last year it was running fine; now it's barely keeping me connected. My job requires that I work from home so this is a serious issue. Can I get a new router? I have the old 2701hg-b model
