Canceling dial-up service; email sub-accounts

I'm thinking of finally canceling my AT&T dial-up service, which I've been holding on to for years, because I thought it was required in order for me to access my email addresses.  I now learn that I can still access my email addresses even if I cancel my dial-up service.  I have a few questions:

 

1.  Is it correct that canceling dial-up service will have no effect on my ability to access my current email addresses?

 

2.  If so, will all of my SUB-accounts be accessible as well?  (I own the primary account; and other family members have different email addresses in sub-accounts to my primary account.  I want to ensure that they can access their own email addresses in sub-accounts.)

 

3.  If "yes" to item 2 above, do I have to do anything to continue accessing the primary account AND sub-accounts?  Is there a procedure I must perform to enable continued access to email?

I forgot to state in my original post that my email addresses are in the "prodigy.net" domain, which was acquired by AT&T several years ago.  I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

My name is Morgan, I'm one of the U-verse Community Specialists. The short answer to you question is.... Yes, we have implemented a process that will allow the customer to keep the email as a Free Email account after cancelling AT&T service.

 

"... When U-verse service is disconnected and the AT&T Member ID is placed on a free AT&T Dial plan with full access to email and portal for 60 days. On day 61, the free AT&T Dial service is terminated; however, the customer retains access to their Member ID(s), email, and portal. At this point, the ID will be a Free AT&T Email and Member ID. If the former customer orders U-verse or DSL service in the future, they have the opportunity to register their U-verse/DSL Internet Service with their Free AT&T Email and Member ID."
Please keep in mind that you may want to backup your contacts and email to your computer using Outlook or another application to prevent losing any data.

Morgan, thank you very much for your help.

 

From your reply, it sounds as though the user (me in the case) won't need to do anything special to maintain the free email account after disconnecting dial-up service.  I'm thinking specifically of "unmerging" accounts.  There's a recommendation somewhere in AT&T's online support pages that advises users to "unmerge" AT&T email accounts that are accessible via yahoo.com as well.  A procedure for unmerging is outlined in that Help page.  Since my email is accessible from att.net and yahoo.com, should I follow that procedure in order to preserve emails, contacts, etc. from my current AT&T email account?  What is the consequence, if anything, of not doing so?

 

Also -- You suggest that emails and contacts be backed up to avoid losing any data.  Are they TYPICALLY lost on day 61 after disconnection of service? Or will they normally NOT be lost on day 61, but you suggest backing up simply as good practice in the UNLIKELY event that emails and contacts are lost?

Hi Morgan,

If I cancel my DSL service but still use ATT.net/Yahoo! as my home page, can I still click on Mail and access my prodigy.net emails?

ATT and yahoo are business partners, and yahoo provides all of att's e-mail service.

Folks who are NOT att customers can set their home page to the att/yahoo homepage. period.

It is yahoo's home page, really, they just let att put their logo on it. You can use yahoo dot com and can acess your att.net e-mails just fine.

 

The caviots of terminating att:

you can keep using the e-mails, but tech support is only provided with automated tools. No live support. (make sure you have your recovery e-mail set up, your password written down, plus your security questions, and answers. you don't want to lose them.

your licence to use McAfee is revoced, and you can't use it any more.

Your sub-accounts will still work, but you can't make any more. and if for whatever reason, you close one, you cant re-create it.

 

IF you merged a yahoo account with your att account, it is a good idea to un-merge it. (If you never merged them, then never mind.

 

That is the highlights. Hope it helps.

In a way I am reluctant to cancel but my monthly ATT Internet fee for DSL, which I have not used for many years, is $25.95.

At one time AOL had a low fee for folks who just wanted to have it for email.  You think AT&T could have a fee of, say, $9.95 per month for folks like us?  Outside of this forum I have not contacted AT&T for years.  I don't even get a monthly bill; I am on autopay and the fee is charged to my AT&T Universal card.

I honestly have not a clue what they charge for it, but have heard they still have dial up internet service.

To be fair, if you have home phone service, you are technically still an active ATT customer, with your myatt global login.  Granted, not sure if that still counts for internet service, but you'd definatly still have access to the e-mails.

That is a good question to ask....

Mighy expensive options JUST to keep an e-mail address. BUT, also understand wanting to hold on to a part of history loke keeping your prodogy address.

I miss my old mindspring e-mail address, for instance. Talk about history.

 

Keep in mind, I'm another att customer, and only speak for myself.

On the other hand, I read posts on here constantly, and pick up tib bits of knowledge here and there.

Whatever your choice, i wish you the best of luck.

I think I will go into my local AT&T store and ask if there is a special fee for my type of customer.  Note that some of the fees I have seen on this forum are less expensive than mine, although not as low as $9.995 per month.  I think it would be a good business decision to have a special rate for folks who like me.

My question concerns our ATT email accounts.  We have one primary account and one sub account.  They were initially set up when we had ATT dialup, then DSL internet service.  In 2010 our DSL service was transferred to Covad because ATT stopped providing DSL in our area (Virginia).  We were allowed to retain our ATT email addresses.  We have since been transferred from Covad to Megapath and now Global Capacity as our DSL provider due to mergers/sales.  My question is, if we cancel our (now) Global Capacity DSL service, will we be able to retain and access our ATT emails?  The primary email is accessed through Outlook, the sub account is accessed through the att.net/yahoo web page.  The primary email is also linked to our ATT cell phone service. Since my original questions were never addressed in any of the replies I received I decided to ask AT&T while calling about something else. I was told that when we close our AT&T account we could keep all our bellsouth.net email accounts (main + several subaccounts) and access all of them as we have been (some using Thunderbird on a desktop, some using Yahoo webmail and some on phone or nook). We would have to be sure to have all the security questions set up so that we could reset passwords if any problems since we may not be eligible for AT&T Support help once we no longer have an active account.
