Microcell only gets power light

Help!

On installation, my Microcell only gets power light on.  AT&T Microcell support has tried to resolve this issue to no avail and sent me 2 more Microcell towers and still only get the power light.

In Texas with Comcast, my old router, and my 1st Microcell, I had no issues.  We just moved to Deland, FL, Comcast not available so using Brighthouse cable, my old router and my 1st Microcell, only got the power light on the Microcell.  Now with AT&T support, 2 more Microcell towers and a new router, I still only get the power light.

I'll call AT&T again, but doubt they will help.  I've asked for a tech support person to come to my residence, but they say they don't offer that.

Can anyone here help?  I'm not good with computers, so need very basic instructions.

I went to dust and reconfigure my entertainment center and upon disconnecting the M-cell, I am now having the same issue. Everything was fine but now just the power light. Do not listen to anyone who says that it should be enough power. I used my router power cable on the m-cell and now it works fine!!! It was the cable!!!! I'm assuming it's the cable for everyone that this suddenly started happening to. It's def worth a check to save time and aggravation. The cable will not power up my router. So the cable is sending just enough power to turn the power light on and that's about it. I know it sounds silly, but TRUST ME!!!

I'm surprised that AT&T didn't mention ConnecTech. They used to send a technician to your house, at a cost to  you, for troubleshooting and setup of their equipment. Maybe they've changed their service offerings.

If the only green light you get is the power light, then there is obviously no internet connection or GPS lock, which would result in no 3G light as well. Let's start with the basics. Is the MicroCell within 18" of a window with an unobstructed view of the sky? Is it at least 2' away from any WiFi source? Are  your ethenet cables in good condition and firmly in place? Is your internet service ok? If the answer to all of those is yes, then we can move on.

Try priority setup: modem -> MicroCell -> router. That connects the MicroCell directly to the internet without having to go thru the router which takes the router out of the chain. Does the MicroCell activation page have your correct information (address, phone number of the account holder, serial number of the MicroCell you are currently using)? Does the MicroCell unit rattle if you shake it GENTLY? There are tamper-proof clips inside the MicroCell and if it gets knocked over (the cat knocked it over Smiley Happy) or if someone has attempted to open it up, the clips will come loose and render the MicroCell useless. What are your internet speeds?

The thing that bothers me is that you should at least get the internet light to go green. No internet, no GPS lock, no service.

Thanks for the reply.  All you suggestions were tried previously and suggested by AT&T.  I ran the Brighthouse Networks Speed Test and got 11 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload.  AT&T is sending my issue up a technical level and may hear from them Monday.

I would suggest you send a PM to ATTCustomerCare (see the link in my sig) detailing your problem, what you have done, and include your account info. That's supposed to be quicker than going thru phone support and assigns one person to your issue. They are there from M-F, 8-5, CST. Something just doesn't sound right here.

Only the Power Light is solid green, all the other lights are not lit? Is that correct? We need a little more info: is this a new MicroCell or one purchasd off of eBay? Did it ever work? How do you have it setup (see the MicroCell Troubleshooing guide link in my sig)? ISP? Speeds? etc.

I am having the same problem here to in Houston. My microcell was working fine one day then it just goes out. The power light is the only light on. I tried everything to get it to work thinking it was the router or the cables. Nothing worked. My wife takes it to the Att store to get it warrantied. Thankfully it was under a year. They have to send it to my home. Receive it and set it up. Nothing. Just the power light again. Tried again to get it to work and nothing. Call warranty services to get it warrantied out again. Receive the third microcell. Still doesn't work. What the heck is going on at ATT. I don't see how it could be my end with the problem. It was working fine till about 3 weeks ago. I could get it if the gps, ethernet, and computer light came on but never received a solid connection. But having just the power light on doesn't make sense. Reset button doesn't seem to be functioning either.

This sounds like the exact same problem I am having, I've had my microcell for 2 years with no issues. I came  home from work the other day and nothing but the power light was on, When I connect my laptop to the microcell it just says "network cable unplugged". The Ethernet port on my router doesn't light up either, I be swapped the cables with a working laptop and the Ethernet port lights up on my uverse gateway light up so I know the connection is good and there is a valid I.P. address there but the microcell unit doesnt see it. I've since had at&t send me another one but the same problem occurs ? I guess it's possible that I've been unlucky and had 2 defective units but dang...........

Try a hard reset on the MicroCell after you have it setup the way you want. Hold in the reset button on the back for about 30 seconds and let it go thru its activation process.

I tried hard resetting it multiple times with no luck. I have since made progress though. I was trying to think what is the common denominator, I came to the conclusion that it had to be the power supply, outlet, or power strip. Since I'm a technician I know these type of devices are very sensitive to power. I have since replaced the power supply and plugged the power supply directly into the power outlet ( no power strip, extension cord etc) and the Internet light came on along with the GPS light but.............still no signal / bars light Smiley Sad  it just keeps flashing. Does anyone know how long it should take for this stupid thing to connect ? I remember it being a good 15 to 30 minutes a couple of years ago but not 2 hours  right ?!?

The MicroCell is sensitive to the ac adapter so if that's the culprit, make sure you replace it with one that is rated as good as, if not better, than the original one. I have my setup (MicroCell, DSL gateway, and router) connected to an APC UPS. Ok, so if you now have solid green power, ethernet, and GPS, but blinking green 3G, a hard reset may correct it. It usually takes mine about 8 minutes from a cold start to solid green lights. Every connection is different though so 2 or more hours may be needed (I think AT&T says it may take up to 90 minutes but I've seen it take longer).

My microcell just went to the green light only status and all suggested diagnostics have proved unsuccessful.  The only thing I have left is changing the power supply.  Has there been any further progress on pinning to problem on the power supply?

the only green light is the power light and its a constant green - after reading about others' issues, I was wondering if there is anything else besides the power supply that might be at fault.

internet connection has been proven okay, as are the cables. I did get it on eBay but it did work for two weeks without problems. Others have had similar problems with brand new units and with replacements, so has anyone been able to pin down the problem?

First of all, anything bought off of eBay can be suspect. There's a reason why it's being sold. That being said, if only the Power light comes on, and stays on, it's possible that it's the adapter but one would think that if there is enough power for the light to go on, then there's enough power to run the rest of it. Does the adapter feel hot to the touch? That's a relative judgement I know but it should just be warm to the touch. Kind of like when you are recharging something. Try plugging it into another outlet from a different circuit to rule out any sort of power variability.

The MicroCell can not be repaired so if you have a lemon, or bought a defective one, there's not much you can do. As far as others having the same issue with brand new MicroCells (not refurbs) I haven't seen that many reports.

If the Power light is steady green, I would say that the power supply isn't the problem.  With only the power cable plugged in to the Mcell and the Mcell sitting in a location that allows it to see GPS satellites, the Mcell should show a steady green power light,  steady green GPS light and a flashing 3G light.  Plugging in the Ethernet cable from the router to the Mcell should add a solid green Ethernet light.

The fact that the Mcell did work previously and now just shows a steady green power light only with the Ethernet cable connected to the router from the Mcell would indicate to me the the Mcell has failed.  Since the unit was bought second-hand on eBay, there is no warranty.  I doubt that AT&T will fix Mcells that are off-warranty since all they do is send a refurbished unit for a warranty replacement.  Even if there were a repair option for off-warranty Mcells, it would most likely cost more than buying another one off of eBay.

IMHO, your Mcell is dead and you can buy another unit at a reduced price off of eBay with no warranty or you can buy one from AT&T for $200 and have a one year warranty.  Given that the Mcell's reliability isn't the greatest, you might opt for a warranty if you need one for your home.

There seems to be two reported issues about this from the Florida area and Houston. It's possible that there could be a routing issue or switch failure somewhere along the way that is causing loss of connection and is sort of "dominoing" thru the system. I've seen this before. What I would suggest doing is calling support or PM CustomerCare (link in my sig), detailing your issue, and supplying your complete account info, including location. The more similar complaints that support gets, with location information, the more apt they are to push it up to the network engineers so they can see if there is a failed upstream switch or router somewhere. However, this is a long shot but you never know.

I agree that pricklyman should contact CustomerCare for the sake of being thorough, but regardless of any problems that AT&T may have, the fact that his Mcell initially worked for two weeks and now all he sees is a power light tells me that his Mcell is borked.

If the Mcell is connected to the power supply and the Ethernet cable is disconnected, he should still see a steady green power light, a steady green GPS light (assuming a good Mcell location to see the sky) and a flashing green 3G light.

True. But the MicroCell is a stange beast and anything is possible. On further reflection, the fact that there are two or three reported issues from around Feb. or March, and now one recently makes me think that there is either a bad production run of MicroCell's (if these are new) or these are re-furbed units who have just reached their life expectancy. And yes, at the very lease the ethernet light on the MicroCell should be lit if it detects an open ethernet port.

Thanks for the input Otto & Avedis53. Since I now only have the power light and I've tried other power supplies and the power supply doesn't get too hot, I'll bite the bullet and go to AT&T and get a warranted unit.

Good luck pricklyman.  Let us know if you have any issues with your next Mcell.

@Otto - If it came off eBay used, it was most likely an older hardware version.  You have access to information that I don't see.  You must have a separate forum for you ACE types.

I had this problem and just figured it out.  The power supply (the thing you plug in the wall) might be bad.  Mine was 40 volts and should have been 12V.  You can check this out with a volt meter.  If it is 40V like mine, you can replace it with one (like I had laying around) or buy a new one at Radio Shack.  Anyway, mine was not damaged and worked correctly as soon as I fixed the voltage problem (amazing that it was not damaged).

Interesting....Was the power supply that you measured 40 VDC output on the one that came with the Mcell?  If so, then this would be a good tip to put into the 3G Microcel Technical Guide for Power Light only problems.

As long as the replacement power supply is rated for 12 VDC output with at least 1.25 A, then you should be good to go.

I'm surprised that your Mcell wasn't damaged too.

The ac adapter specs are listed in the Technical Guide. The MicroCell is specific in its power requirments so it's best to keep as close as possible to what was supplied with your MicroCell. 40 VDC is pretty high. Did you buy the MicroCell from a party other than AT&T? Maybe you were given the wrong adapter.

Had the same problem.  Just pulled an old supply out of drawer a few minutes ago that had the same specs and fit and voila!  Working Microcell!  I've had mine for 3 years, from AT & T new.

It's amazing how many issues we see here that are easily corrected with a new power supply. As long as one sticks to the specs, you should be fine.
