Upgrade and credit check

Does ATT do a credit check when upgrading your phone? I know they did one when i signed up 2 years ago but don't know if they do one everytime you upgrade. I'm trying to keep my credit straight to buy a car in the near future and credit checks ding your credit.

Thank you.

Hello @jessimrgn!

Thank you for reaching out! It is great to hear you are ready to upgrade your device! I will be more than happy to provide important information regarding this process!

I understand the importance of knowing your credit score for different purposes. When new customers acquire post-paid services, AT&T is required to check credit scores prior to selling this type of service.

Checking your credit score history allows AT&T to determine if you qualify for our best offers. If you are upgrading your current line, a new credit check will not be required. I recommend visiting our official website to review our available upgrade options.

I hope you enjoy your new phone and congrats on the purchase of your new car as well!

Best regards!

HI, I am a AT&T customer since 2009 and I have 3 phones lines. If I go for upgrading 2 of my phone lines (upgrading to I phone 12 with 36 months installment plan) will AT& T run my credit?  all of my phone lines are under auto pay and I have never been behind a payment. Please reply.

Allow us to provide the answers for a tenured customer such as yourself @Samhewa!

Do understand that we can't determine if a credit check is required when proceeding with a device upgrade on an AT&T account. That solely depends on the account itself and the owner.

Once you have decided to begin with a device upgrade at an AT&T store, by phone call or online, you will be notified if a credit check is necessary or not in order to continue the device upgrade process with a installment plan.

We hope this information helps, and thank you for continuing to choose AT&T as your service provider!

Hi Dwight, thank you so much for your reply. As I said it’s only upgrading my phone from I phone XR to iPhone 12 and my payment history is always on time and excellent as it’s autopay all the time since 2009.

since I’m planning to apply for a housing loan shortly, I don’t want to ruin my credit score if Att&t run my credit for this upgrade. Can you please ask your collection department if they run credit scores for existing customers(with excellent payment history)who upgrade their phones for 36 months installments Program?

again thank you so much for all your help.🙏

Thank you following back up @

We'd be than happy to confirm if a credit will be ran in order for you to upgrade. We just don't have access to the necessary resources.

Also, we don't direct contact with our Fraud support.

Please let us know if you have additional concerns.
