Why can't I view uverse tv from my laptop?

Previously I was able to stream directly from my laptop, now it seems u-verse streaming is only available on wireless devices.

The U-verse web page, where one was able to stream from a Windows laptop (and possibly other more esoteric devices) has been shutdown for a few years now.  There are certain wired devices that can still run the U-verse App (FireTV Cube has an Ethernet adapter, as do some other similar devices).

Without renting a receiver (or if you want to watch away from home), your best bet is going to be the apps from individual channels.

You can also get a Slingbox which is installed between your U-Verse receiver and the TV. The downside is that if you want to watch U-Verse on the TV *and* the laptop, you'd have to watch the same show on both.
