"without taking it out"... of what?
If it's in a phone now, turn the phone on. If you see the AT&T logo, and bars with no other messages, then it works. That means that someone has been paying the bill on that account with that number.
If it says "SOS", "No Service" or "Emergency Calls Only", then the SIM is deactivated - no good, might as well just toss it.
