If you had turned off auto pay as you got on the plane to leave the USA permanently, that would have ended any automatic refills and eventually closed your account. Did you turn off auto pay in your pay go online account?

The way to cancel prepaid is to stop paying. If you disabled autopay or don’t have autopay, your account will cancel automatically. If you did not disable autopay before leaving, doing that from South Africa may prove difficult as you may not be able to access your account from there. You may need to cancel the card used for autopay to stop further payments.
