No you need to activate the phone for it to work

Yes, you can get a Text now number and it will work through that app as your phone number. Keep in mind you will have to be on a wifi network for you to get calls or texts. It is not going to connect you to the cell network it will only give you a number to use for texting or calling.

If you purchased a phone from at&t, you have to activate the sim card to use the phone with cellular.
