Prepaid network signal fluctuates and drops frequently

Hi

I live in Madison, WI (53705), and use AT&T prepaid. I bought the SIM together with an AT&T prepaid phone. Now, when I put the SIM in a new unlocked iPhone SE, the signal keeps fluctuating and drops frequently. Even with my prepaid phone I never got a full signal but it never cut-off. I tried updating the IMEI number in my prepaid account but it didn't work. What might be the reason?

Thanks

Hey @charleskdavis,

Having a fluctuating phone signal can be frustrating but we are here to help.

Generally the fastest way to fix signal issues is to power-cycle the device completely off and back on to get a refreshed signal. We notice you mentioned having an unlocked iPhone SE. We cannot guarantee service on an unlocked device that was not originally formatted four our network. However, we can check a few things to make sure you are getting the most out of your device and thank you for updating the IMEI from the prepaid website.

We would recommend making sure your iPhone OS is updated to the latest version first. Checking the zip code 53705 reflects in our tools a moderate to low coverage zone depending on where you are located. There are a lot of trees in the area and a conservation park near by that could be affecting the signal rate. We have a tool available for our customers that shows general coverage for your area and allows you to pick prepaid as the network option.

There are a few things we would like to know further in the event we need to reach out to our tech team:

-Do these signal issues happen solely in one place or all around?

-Are you inside or outside when this happens?

-Can you try your sim in an At&t branded/formatted phone to see if the issues are duplicated?

If this does not resolve your issue, please let us know.

Hi

Rebooting the phone didn't resolve the issue. And, my phone has the latest software.

This issue happens in and around my apartment in Eagle Heights (UW madison housing), in other places the network is not bad. In an AT&T prepaid phone, the signal never drops to zero like in my unlocked phone, however, the signal is average. According to the AT&T coverage map, my apartment comes in the 5G/4G LTE area.

Thanks

Hi @charleskdavis

If you're only having issues in one specific area, try using the Mark the Spot app to report dropped calls and network issues directly to our technical team.
