You likely can’t. The only way to get them back is from a backup or from the other phone that sent or received them. ATT doesn’t save your texts.

How to restore a completely locked phone. At & t sent an unlock code for any system card. But enter it not where the phone is locked without the possibility of unlocking

It is irrelevant what type of phone he has. He is engaged the permanent lock, AT&T does not have any way of unlocking this phone. The only code At&t had is the one they gave him.
