Good DSL no phone - dsl filter
I see with search here that with good DSL and no phone service, I can check for wiring problems by connecting a phone to the outdoor Network Interface Device. Will I need to include a DSL filter with that connection to see if I have a dial tone?
Also, for some reason, I have a lineman's butt set. Is there anything I can do extra with that?

A butt set won't do anymore than plugging a phone into the NID. You don't need a filter to test for dial tone. DSL will work on one side of a pair but a phone won't.
