Bellsouth.net email problems
I have spent a massive amount of time trying to find a solution to my problem. It is like the email program freezes after being open or idle for a certain length of time. It will not let me send, save, or open emails. All the folders will show empty. Any composed emails will be lost since I can't save or send them. The only thing I can do is (refresh the screen) sign out and back in over an over all day!! This affects the calendar and contacts also.h
It is bad enough that the stay signed in option no longer works but to have to sign in constantly throughout the day is horrible. Is there a support number or chat available anywhere with help? Any suggestions on how to change email programs without the major headache I feel it would create??? I have a couple of gmail accounts that I have forwarded to my BellSouth acct. I guess I could reverse that but just don't trust the bellsouth account any longer and need to just change everything!! (And yes, I have tried all the blanket suggestions that are usually given about clearing browser etc.) I have only noticed these problems on my laptop since I don't really use my phone for email. I have tried Chrome and Edge browsers.

We understand how important it is for your email to work properly, janicefr48.
Let's see if the following troubleshooting options from our Login and Email Solutions article helps.
Update your browser - many features are only compatible with the latest browser, and we recommend updating it.
Test signing in to your webmail using another browser, other than Chrome and Edge.
Disable browser tools or add-ons - the varies by device and browser.
Let us know if your email performs better after trying these options, or if you're still having problems.

You can't auto forward from any Yahoo/AT&T without signing up for Yahoo Mail Plus ($5/mo).
There's no solution for this Yahoo server problem, just the workaround you've already discovered.
If you want to move away from the bellsouth account, you can set up Gmail to import your existing bellsouth emails and contacts by using the Import tool in Gmail's Settings->Accounts and Import. It will pull that data over and continue to monitor for incoming emails and move them over for 30 days.

After the 30 days of moving them, does that disable the bellsouth.net email or can it still be used?
I just don't think it is possible for me to change my email in every account and subscription etc that comes to my Bellsouth email. I have used is for as long as I have had email.

No, the Gmail tool doesn't have any affect on your bellsouth account. The tool just copies the emails so the account will be exactly as you last left it.
It used to be that after 30 days you could start it up again and it would monitor for another month but I don't know if that's still an option.
