Uverse 2wire 3801 Gateway/Modem Upgrade

I want to replace my old AT&T 3801 gateway/modem to an Ethernet only modem that can utilize the latest wireless standards. I've tried to speak with Uverse tech support but they are the worst representatives for support as they know little about technology and/or the equipment AT&T provides its customers.

The reason I'm asking this is because I've upgraded my home wiring infrastructure to CAT 6 and want to replace the current coax cable feed from the AT&T junction box to the modem with CAT 6. I know the 2Wire 3801 is outdated and I thought the Netgear 7550 would be an upgrade to the 2wire. What language does Uverse tech support understand that will get me what I'm asking for?

First, understand that you cannot go into a store (or shop at Amazon) and purchase a device that can replace your 3801.  You could ask AT&T to replace your 3801 with a newer device, but unless it is exhibiting some problem, they may not be willing to do that.

You could purchase your own router and connect it behind the 3801 in DMZplus mode and gain many of the benefits you desire.

The 3801 can be connected from the NID via twisted pair (such as Cat6 or Cat5e) instead of coax.  This is likely something you should leave to an AT&T technician, though.  If you upgraded to a level of U-verse HSI that required you to have dual-pair, then they'd have to come out and give you a newer gateway that supports dual pair and install a twisted pair from your NID to the Gateway.  But there would likely be a trip charge for it.

Actually that Nid to RG run should be upgraded to cat5e, coax is outdated and should possibly see better service after that's done.

Contact ATT Uverse Care on the link in my signature below.

Send them a Private Message, on this link, and they should be able to give the help needed to solve your Uverse service Nid to RG coax replacement problems. They are available M-F 8am-11pm Eastern time (also around on weekends), response may take up to 2 business days.

This is not the regular CS/TS phone people, but the social media Community Specialists that know the people to contact. I personally know as they've helped me on a DVR swap and gone above and beyond. They can do more than any phone rep can and stick w/it till it's done.

Include your name, account #, email address and a good phone # (land or cell) and time to contact you on.

Check the blue PM envelope, upper right on every page, for their reply. Good luck 😉

Edit:  Cat 6a would be a good replacement to the cat 5e, even though cat 5e can carry gigabit over 4 (2pair) wires.

Thanks for the reply but I think I'm not getting my point across. I want AT&T to sell me a replacement gateway/modem that is superior to the 3801. I realize I can upgrade my infrastructure by adding a router to the gateway for traffic segmentation but I want the best technology that AT&T currently offers to send that data out to my network.

Might want to wait, things they are a changin on Uverse.  ATT is coming out w/the Home Media Gateway, handling routing, access and storage, probably eliminating DVR/STBs in the process.

It's being built w/'thin hardware profiles' on DirecTV architecture.  A single CPE setup, probably sending Uverse to get program material in the 'cloud'.  Said to be 3rd party app very friendly. 😉

Edit:  AT&T added the platform, which it called a "home media gateway" in its presentation, will support third-party broadband connections, LTE connections and AT&T broadband connections into users' homes.
