new modem router compatibility

hello, Im trying to look into a new modem router as I've experienced horrible connection issues for the past few years. I currently own the ATT Uverse 5268AC modem router. Ive had this modem router since 2016 and im finally deciding to pull the trigger and attempt to get a upgrade! The issues with my current modem router have been consistent and on my phone for the most part Id rather use cellular data rather than connecting to my own wifi. I pay for high speeds and yet I hear my children screaming about lag on their consoles all the time and when I go check for myself their mbps has never once since I owned this router been above 25.0 mbps. I've been heavily considering the NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem AX2700 but no matter how much I look I cannot find out if it is compatible with att or not. Im not sure if I should buy an entire new modem router or maybe just a router if its possible to connect to my Uverse and obviously will 100% raise my speeds. I would like to know if the NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem AX2700 is compatible or if there is anyway someone can point me in the right direction please. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. im looking for anything under $350.

To answer your question about the "NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem AX2700": no, it is not compatible.  It is a DOCSIS device, meaning it would work with CATV-based services like Xfinity and Spectrum.  AT&T requires you to use equipment that they provide to connect to their network (either ADSL2+/VDSL2 or Fiber to the Premises).  The 5268ac is not much older than the BGW210, but isn't as well thought of in the Wi-Fi department and is no longer getting firmware updates.

What internet service level are you subscribed to?  If your connection doesn't provide more than 25 Mbps, then your Wi-Fi clients aren't going to get more than that.  If your Wi-Fi clients are connecting using 802.11g on 2.4 GHz, then they're not going to get much more than that, even though 5268AC is capable of 802.11ac which can be faster than that.  All of your users share your connection, so if someone's watching HD Netflix, there will be less left for others.

Is bandwidth your biggest complaint, or your ability to stay connected via Wi-Fi?

Hello @4ourty2wo,

We understand the gravity and importance of a seamless connection. Let's work on a fix and find out what's causing this!

There are quite a few factors that can affect your internet speeds:

(1) Wi-Fi signal strength can cause slow speeds because it can be based on environment of gateway, building materials or appliances, and interference.

(2) Number of Devices and activities. The more devices that you have on your network at once, the slower the internet is going to be.

(3) Device type and age can cause slow speeds if the computer is older than most of the equipment. The newer the equipment the faster it is going to be.

We recommend that you follow the troubleshooting steps below:

You can fix many common internet issues by restarting your modem, Wi-Fi® gateway or All-Fi Hub. Here’s how:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of your device. If you have:
    • An internal battery backup, remove it.
    • DSL service, unplug your telephone cord from your modem or gateway.
  2. Wait 20 seconds.
  3. Put the internal battery back in, if applicable.
  4. Plug the power cord back in. If you have DSL service, reconnect the telephone cord.
  5. Wait up to 10 minutes for the gateway or hub to restart.

Also, please feel free to troubleshoot your internet here !

We also recommend that you use our Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool. This will let you test your lines to see if there are any issues causing those slow speeds

Learn how to optimize and get the most out of your internet.

Net Gear Nighthawk works with AT&T U-Verse.

 To set it up,

(1)  Enable DMZplus or IP Passthrough for the Netgear Nighthawk Router in the firewall settings for the AT&T Gateway.
(2) Disable WIFI on the AT&T Gateway
(3) Connect it to the WAN port of the Nighthawk to start accessing the internet.

@4ourty2wo

Just a point of clarification.  You should be able to have Att replace the 5268 with a BGW210, but you'll still want your own personal router to get proper WiFi.   Att mandates the use of their gateway, there's no getting around that.

Netgear is a fine brand, just forget about the cable modem stuff.
