Compatible third party wifi routers?

I am considering purchasing a third party wifi router, but keep seeing comments about ensuring it is 'compatible'.  What exactly does this mean?  Can I just purchase any NETGEAR wifi router and set it up?  Any recommendations on which wifi routers are good?  Not looking for something super expensive, but something that will give me a noticeable boost in my internet speed.

Are you sure those comments aren't in the context of someone asking for a router to replace the att supplied gateway?  Those would be followed up with "no you cannot replace the att gateway but nothing stopping you from cascading your chosen gateway behind the att gateway"?  So there shouldn't be any restriction on what you chose so long as it is connected behind the att gateway (router).

Given that restriction is there some special need for the additional router?  For example, better wifi, parental controls, etc.?  If so, go for it!
