BGW320-500 Ethernet Stops

I have a new BGW320-500. Randomly, any ethernet connections plugged in no longer connect. Anything on WIFI works great. When plugging straing in it sounds like it connect for a few seconds and then makes the disconnected sound. This happens on multuiple devices of different types. Laptops, switches, roku, etc. Then it will randomly start working again.

ATT already replaced it once but I am wondering if it is something else that is doing it? Firewall rules, etc?

I have tried factory resetting, power recycle and nothing makes a difference.

I work from home and find this frustrating to switch to WIFI and lose speed. I need to hard wired. Help!

I feel so silly. Since some items were working and some did not I started with a logical approach of swapping with what I knew worked. I swapped out the wires and everything started working. I did this before with brand new cables and it still failed. The cables passed cable tests but for some reason it was not good enough. I got more high quality cables and it works.

I am so sorry to waste everyone's time but hopefully someone else may find this useful. I think the takeaway is not to use "Amazon choice" cables!

The Ethernet ports on (at least some) BGW320's seem to be very temperamental.  Some firmware revisions seem to have improved the situation, but it is not fixed even in the latest versions.  Switching cables (sometimes from tested-good-for-gigabit cables) has also corrected issues for some.

I'm not sure if it's all in the software, or in the hardware, or isolated to one or the other manufacturing variant (the -500 indicates one manufacturer, -505 the other; they should be functionally equivalent).

That is unfortunate. Sometimes it work and sometimes it doesnt is not a good thing. I have tried different wires multiple times. I wonder if I can request a different gateway.

That link does not work. The unit is new with factory settings. I have had it for a few weeks and it works and then doesnt work.

My problem is when I connect with Ethernet there is no connection. I tried four different laptops, brand new high quality cables, etc.

If you have a standalone ONT, ask for a BGW210.

I worked with AT&T and got a new gateway shipped. My issue was still occuring so I tried a few different things.

All connections are ethernet.

  • BGW320-500 --> Laptop
    • Seems to work, I need to give it more time to see if it times out.
  • BGW320-500 --> TPLink SG1008D --> Printer/NAS
    • Works, this one only goes to two printers and my synology NAS
  • BGW320-500 --> TPLink SG1005D --> Laptop
    • Laptop will work for about 5 minute and then it will say "network cable unplugged"
  • BGW320-500 --> TPLink TEG-S80G --> Laptop
    • Laptop will work for about 5 minute and then it will say "network cable unplugged"

For giggles I tried hooking the laptop up to the one switch that seems to work.

  • BGW320-500 --> TPLink SG1008D --> Printer/NAS/Laptop
    • Appears to work, this one only goes to two printers and my synology NAS

The question I have is why would this one switch work but others do not? Is there a setup item in the gateway specific to switches? I have used switches for a long time and do not recall.
