Packet Loss / Increased Latency in League of Legends + Valorant

For the past 2-3 weeks I've experienced an increase from 33-35ms to ~50ms with packet loss that is very noticeable while playing. Ping will start cycling up and down between 35-55ms, be normal for 1 minute, then repeat. Before 2-3 weeks ago (~april 15) I never had any issues, but now the lag gets especially bad around the time everyone gets home from work. Sometimes behaves as normal ~2-3 am, sometimes continues to lag. Talked to customer support twice--said our router was outdated and needed new software (sent the same exact router in the mail, issue not resolved) and then the second agent spammed "we have increased the signal strength" until I gave up and hung up.

The two IP's in the pingplotter were given to me by a riot games customer support agent. He pointed out the 99.176.205.58 node as the problem, and said it was a routing issue between ATT & Riot servers, as well as that only ATT could fix it.

I doubt that a Riot customer support agent has a clue. Could you post the a Share link to these Pingplotter runs. You can use the File > Share navigation links to post a much larger images. I am able to loop back through the AT&T internal network and reach 99.176.205.58 with no packet loss.

@dave006 My mistake--he pointed out 99.176.205.60 not the other one I said previously.

Here are the share images from today. The ping plotter results I originally attached were the worst packet loss I've noticed, but even with less PL% showing on PingPlotter, the latency + packetloss in-game felt the same.

As a note in the same timeframe (last couple weeks) with a different ISP I have had an increase in issues with LoL where it is like what happens on screen pulls an Ekko and rewinds within about 3 seconds. Like a momentary lag spike and then settles like it never happened.

@dave006

Do you want any pingplotter or such from another ISP to compare to see if something overlaps or anything?

No 99.176.205.60 is not in either of your (2) Pingplotter traces without the VPN. I am going to bet that referenced IP is 99.176.205.58 which shows in both of your first (2) traces. So the Riot CSR was just guessing. I know it is not the issue since the nodes beyond it don't show any increase up to 100% Packet Loss (PL) but only average 0.3% PL.

99.176.205.58 does not show up in your VPN trace since your ICMP packets are in a VPN tunnel. Using the logic the Riot CSR used the issue would be at Riots end: 192.64.173.51 with 100% PL but the same rules apply to all nodes beyond your home network. Each router is rate limited to the number of ICMP Echo replies per second to limit excessive processor(s) usage.

The Pingplotter trace using your VPN to 192.64.173.51 actually shows the worst latency path results with latency at 265 ms. However it should perform the best since it shows the shortest route path to 192.64.173.51.

I agree that you are seeing an issue during game play but these Pingplotter traces don't show enough information to know where exactly the issue is located.

@dave006 thank you for the reply. What would you do if you were in my position? I’m open to whatever advice you may have. Ideally I don’t want to switch ISP but if that’s the only option I understand. It just feels like something changed on ATT backend that caused this problem to start. I looked up where all the hops went and it was from coast to coast basically. I’m no expert on networking so I’m not sure if that means anything but I’m just trying to throw everything at the wall here.

Your Valorant Game server is in the Los Angles area of CA. From your home link in the Baton Rouge, LA market your traffic is routed to Houston and then Dallas and directly handed off to Riot in Dallas on direct link to Riot in Los Angles.

Your LoL Game server is physically in the Chicago area. Your Pingplotter traces follows the same path to Dallas and then handed off in Dallas.

What VPN are you currently trying? What other ISP services are available to your?

Different VPNs have different routing so you may want to try a couple of different VPN providers: Nord VPN, Express VPN, Surfshack VPN, and Proton VPN. Check for the latest free offers or the best 1 month offers.

Yes @Juniper a couple of examples from other ISP routes to the same targets would be helpful. May indicate a common point.
