Review this link and configure based on (1) of the 3 ways to pass the DHCP WAN IP address to a device on the LAN which will be reflected as the WAN address for your ASUS Router.

Hi @edwardpohl45,

We understand that you want to set up your ASUS ZenWIFI XT9 with the AT&T modem NVG589 Arris. Let's guide you in the right direction.

Thank you, @dave006, For sharing your insights. @edwardpohl45, please go through this article which will give you detail information on Configuring IP Passthrough and DMZplus.

First, let's start with the physical connection:

  • Connect your optical modem (NVG589 Arris) to the WAN port of one of your ZenWIFI XT9 units using an Ethernet cable.
  • This ZenWIFI XT9 unit will serve as the AiMesh router.
  • Power on both the modem and the ZenWIFI XT9.

IP Passthrough Configuration:

  • Access the web interface of your NVG589 Arris modem. You can usually do this by typing its IP address (often 192.168.1.254) into a web browser.
  • Log in using your modem’s credentials (usually found on a sticker on the modem).
  • Look for the IP Passthrough settings. These settings allow you to pass the public IP address directly to your ZenWIFI XT9 router.
  • Enable IP Passthrough and select the Passthrough mode (usually “DHCPS-fixed” or “Manual”).
  • Enter the MAC address of your ZenWIFI XT9 router (you can find this on the router itself).
  • Save your changes.

Configure Your ZenWIFI XT9:

  • Connect to the ZenWIFI XT9’s Wi-Fi network (use the same SSID and password as your NVG589 Arris modem to avoid reconfiguring devices).
  • Access the ZenWIFI XT9’s web interface (usually by typing its IP address, such as 192.168.50.1, into a web browser).
  • Set up your Wi-Fi network, security settings, and any other preferences.

Make sure your devices can connect to the internet through the ZenWIFI XT9. Verify that the IP Passthrough is working correctly by checking if your ZenWIFI XT9 has the public IP address assigned. Remember to save your changes and test your internet connection.

We hope these steps help and feel free to reach back out if you have any other questions or concerns!

@edwardpohl45

If your sole or main purpose is to get better WiFi, forego ip passthrough and just set your personal router to operate in Access Point mode.  Easier for you all around.
