Moving the Modem/Router to a different location.

When the tech installed my fiber internet, he was adamant against going into my attic to run the internet where i wanted it and so when put it where it was convenient.  I want to move the router, but I'm not sure what type of cable I need to run from the wall box to the modem.

It does not appear to be a standard ethernet cable.  I'm going to need to run about 40' of cable to get it where I want it.

Thanks

Hello RGL1963,

We do understand your concern about relocating your AT&T RG (Residential Gateway); modem/router.

Various reasons can be in place regarding the installation of the RG, relating to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) location. The technician assigned to your install likely reviewed the ONT and supported you with the best location regarding signal. We certainly wouldn’t want you to have any “dead zones” that would create connection problems for your devices.

Should you go forward with tackling this relocation on your own, the cabling that connects your RG to the ONT will be a 1000Base-T cable. (Cat 6 will be fine)

We do offer an opportunity to review a relocation possibility. That would require a dispatch and the pricing for relocation is $99.00. Additional charges could also be possible for wall drops, etc.

We hope that you find this information helpful. Should you need any further assistance, feel free to reply.

browndk26 - so just any standard cat6 cable will work?  It looked like the connectors were different.

AT&T Chad - his issue was that it was extremely hot and he didn’t want to go to the attic. I don’t feel I should have to pay another service fee to do it again. I will just run a cable and move it.

thank you bothe for your help.

@RGL1963 , rj45 connectors. Just to confirm, grab any Ethernet cable you have in the house  and connect it to the ONT. I’ve read before that att discourages techs from going into attics. Safety risk of stepping off ceiling Joists and injuring the tech and damaging the ceiling.

@browndk26 my setup is similar to yours. Is it possible to move the ONT unit? I cant figure out how to get it off the wall. I dont see any screws. Do I just pull it off?

The ONT cannot be moved by the customer. Call for a tech visit to move the ONT. There would be a charge to move it. Approximately $150.

I'm going to be moving to the basement apartment of my unit. My at&t fiber connection, modem and fiber optic box is in the 3rd floor unit where I used to live. Does the At&t technician need to rerun the fiber optic cable to my new unit. How are they going to install fiber optic internet in my new apartment, since there is a garage and there is a back entry way.

@Lawiter700

If a different unit number need a complete new install. The fiber and ONT stay with the current unit for future tenant that desires to order ATT fiber internet. You only take the gateway with you, likely a 210 or 5268.
