How To Bypass Internal ONT Box & Run Fiber Straight To BGW320

I recently got a BGW320 gateway and was curious about the SFP port on the back of the unit. My current set up is that I have a fiber optic line coming from outside my home in, the fiber optic line is then going into an internal ONT w/ fiber jack box, then from the internal ONT box the signal is convert to electrical and sent out the RJ45 port via ethernet cable to the BGW320 gateway. If you look at the image below the red circled port is what I am interested in using. Currently I am using the green circled port...

I wanted to know if it is possible to completely bypass the internal ONT box and run the fiber optical cable directly to the BGW320 gateway (red circled port in image below)? I ask because I would like to clean up my "network closet" and get rid of any unneeded equipment...

When I received the new gateway it did not come with the silver/metal SFP adapter plug. Is this something that I could purchase online or request to be sent to me from AT&T?

A tech visit is required to remove the external Ont and switch to fiber to the gateway. $99 charge to do so. Then you would get the sfp adapter.

The SFP needed would be GPON which has a GREEN band. XSGPON band is RED.

However the ONT is assigned to the port at the PFP requiring a the existing ONT to be deactivated and the ONT in the BGW 320 to be activated. The same process would be needed if swapped the existing 010 ONT with a different 010 ONT… different serial number needing activation on system.

To swap ONT to 320, Additionally the tech would remove the remove existing ONT including face plate and install a new streamlined face plate and provide a fiber line between the faceplate and SFP replacing the Ethernet line from ONT to gateway.

Tech would also clean connection, replace fiber end if needed and run a series of tests, 5 in total from memory, to ensure no issue(s). Tests include light level, photo of placement uploaded, speed test, Wi-Fi assessment, etc.

Hi @gstrib5,

We hear you, and we're glad to help!

@browndk26 Thanks for sharing the input. As mentioned, to run fiber straight to the router BGW320, we will have to book a technician appointment which comes with a cost of $99.

Let us know if you want us to book a technician, we can take this conversation to a Direct Message.

@ATTHelp Yes. Could you send me a DM so I can have this service scheduled?

Honestly not worth it. The fiber line from the wall to the BGW320 is fragile and to replace or troubleshoot a break in the fiber line they have to send a $99 tech.  Oh and the fiber line inside your house is like 6 feet and they won't shorten it. I have had to call them and replace it twice.

What speed service do you have? Sometimes the tech visit is free if you upgrade to a higher speed service (or complain that you have the higher speed service and not able to get past 100Mb with an external ONT).
