Add att.net email account to Outlook 2019

I am trying to set up a new computer for my mother with Office apps, but she does not want to change her att.net email address. I was able to link her att.net email alias to an Office subscription that includes Outlook but am unable to add her att.net email account to Outlook (i.e. she cannot see any emails that are sent to her att.net email address in Outlook). I tried linking the accounts automatically and got an error message that says "We couldn't log on to the incoming (IMAP) mail server). I got the same message when I tried to log on manually using the settings below:

Incoming mail -

Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Port: 993

Encryption method: SSL/TLS

Require logon using SPA: (have tried checking the box and leaving it unchecked)

Outgoing mail -

Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Port: 993

Encryption method: SSL/TLS

Require logon using SPA: (have tried checking the box and leaving it unchecked)

What else can I do to enable her to use Outlook to read her email without having to change her email address?

Hey @MariaAM I will help you with your Outlook issue,

Here are a few steps to assist you configuring your att.net account to work with your Outlook application on your computer.

  • Check your Antivirus
  • Make sure your account is properly configured
  • Use IMAP instead of POP account
  • Remove your email profile
  • Start Outlook in Safe Mode.
  • Switch to Google DNS
  • Use webmail, or a different email client.

Let us know if this helps.

Outgoing mail -

Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Port: 993

This needs to be smtp.mail.yahoo.com with port 465 for outgoing mail

Require logon using SPA: (have tried checking the box and leaving it unchecked)

This needs to be unchecked.

Also to login you need to use a "secure mail key" instead of your real password like you would use on the Yahoo webmail website.

You can create a secure mail key using the detailed instructions here.

The secure mail key did it.  Thank you!
