Unlock AT&T phone from friend in order to switch carriers
I got an iPhone from my friend in 2021 (AT&T user). He had completed a factory reset before giving me the phone. I switched to T-Mobile and would like to continue using the iPhone. T-Mobile submitted an unlock phone request using my AT&T account info, phone number, passcode, and e-mail. The status is still processing, but I am wondering if my friend should actually submit the request instead using his information (phone number, pass code, e-mail). Whose AT&T account information is required to submit the unlock request? Thank you.

I'm not sure how T-Mobile could submit an unlock request for you, but okay.
If it gets denied, yes you should have the original owner submit the request.

If the phone is still under the friend’s account, the unlock request needs to be submitted using your friend’s account information. If it’s no longer on anyone’s account, select no when it asks if you have an AT&T phone number and unlock using IMEI only.
