invalid MMI code upon activation

this is a AT&T Prepaid Moto G GO phone I just bought. Inputed the activation code  *888*PIN NUMBER# got Invalid MMI Code

I have tried: Restart phone, put out and re insert sim card, re start in safe mode, cycle airplane mode on/off, reset network, full factory reset. I did ensure I was receiving a signal from the AT&T network, Is this phone defective or is there something else I need to do?

Hi @karlhoelscher,

We understand you’re having some trouble getting service. No worries! I would be delighted to help out and get this resolved for you!

If you’re receiving an error message stating ‘Invalid MMI code’, it sounds like your SIM card is not activated. This is a pretty easy fix! You can activate your SIM card online at att.com/activate. Just insert the ICCID located on your SIM card and the device’s IMEI. Then restart the phone and ensure your service is working correctly.

Once you power cycle, if you’re still receiving the error message, I would recommend getting a new SIM card. You can get one from any one of our AT&T Company retail stores.

I hope this helps out, and you’re able to start using your phone! Have a spectacular day!

Thank you,

Jessica, AT&T Community Specialist
