Pre-paid card for refund

I cancelled my wireless home phone and had a credit on my account.  I requested the credit and was sent a pre-paid card with my account balance loaded.  However, there is a $3 monthly charge on the card. Really?  Why not just send me a check so I get my entire balance and not cheat me out of money?  Is AT&T part of the family of companies that issued this card so my money all stays in family?  Probably.  Who knows.  But I am so through with everyone’s hands in my pockets.

It's a big pain, but I was able to call the number on the back of the card as soon as it arrived and ask them to mail me a paper check instead,

This is an attempt by AT&T to reduce the money they actually refund due to the fact that many people will not use the card. They also have a claw-back clause where they reduce the payment with a  $3.00 "maintenance" charge per month after a certain period. What should happen is that you should be able to apply the refund to the current month's charge or get a refund by check. Call the number on the back of the card and demand a check.

AT&T is a terrible company. And this practice of issuing a MC for a refund is an example of just how shady they are. They put up a bunch of barriers to getting YOUR money back. Even if you're ok with the card you now need to spend YOUR TIME getting it activated. If you don't want the card, you still need to call them and request a check, which now will take an additional 7-10 business days. Oh, and if you don't get the check you now have to call them again! All to get YOUR OWN MONEY back!!!

I actually called the main AT&T number to ask about my account and how to get a check instead of the MC (because the instructions on the paperwork with the card really push you to create an on-line account). After waiting 20min they told me another department handles that and gave me a new number to call. That number was 800-312-7699...it's a (Edited per community guidelines) number, not even sure it's AT&T...starts with an automated menu trying to sell you something. Unbelievable!!!

The instructions with the MC totally obfuscate how to request a check. Even when you call the number on the card you only have two options, 1) Activate your card or 2) Report a lost a stolen card. That's it. (Btw, choose #2 to get person so you can request a check). Why no Option 3 to request a check??? Why is the process for doing that not explained??? Because you are a revenue stream for them even if you're no longer a customer. If you sign up for the card, you're in yet another database that they can sell to others to make money.

AT&T doesn't care about their customers or customer service. If they did, they would simply send you a check for the refund. Instead, they continue to try to monetize you. Giving you a card, having create yet another separate on-line account so that they, and their partners, can continue to sell, sell, sell.

I was a fan of Directv and was a customer for over 16 years. AT&T bought Directv and ruined everything that made that service good. With that, and the horrific customer experience, I will NEVER be an AT&T customer again. Not wireless, not internet, not Directv, the new TV service they're pushing...nada!

Yes, a hassle for sure. You have to activate the card, setup an online account, and then in the online account, you can transfer funds to a check.

I requested a refund on a credit amount on my ATT Directv account after I closed my account in Early September 2020 and was told I will receive a refund in 30 days. That never happened and so I chatted online with ATT and have they said something was done wrong internally and I would receive the payment in 5-7 days. That never happened. I then chatted again with ATT in late November and was told again they had improperly processed the return and again promised I would be receiving the refund in 5 business days. That never happened. So now we are in early January 2021 and I chatted again with ATT and explained I still have not received the refund and they again said they are very sorry and indicated I would definitely receive the refund in 5-7 days. That's where we are today. 31/2 months since I close the account with hours of time following up with ATT and unlikely I will ever get my refund. ATT lost me as a client forever. Here are snippets of my chats with ATT.

November 2020

Jaison : Upon checking, i can see that refund of $65.16 has been successfully waived off and has been approved in your account.
Steve : what does that mean
Jaison : Please do not worry, you will receive the credit in your next bill.
Steve : I want a refund sent by check as I canceled my service with ATT in September and no longer do business with ATT
Jaison : The refund was request and it has been successfully approved and i can see that you are having $65.16.
December 29th
Leo : I really wished to help you with this refund since I am an agent and your account is cancelled I do not have an authorization to perform any action in this account.
Leo : I hope you understand..
January 2021
Georgina : But since you have me online, I'll process an escalation for this credit balance so you can have it after 5 business days. I do apologize for the hassle this has caused you
Me : No. I chatted with an agent on December 8th and he indicated I would receive the refund in 3 business days. Here is his communication on chat:

We called several months ago to ask for a check instead of the AT & T PrePaid Mastercard. We never received the check and now the customer service number will not allow us to speak to a live person because the card is expired. Is there a way to complain on to the Better Business Bureau or another entity. I am surprised there isnt a (Edited per community guidelines) suit. We just want our refund from the credit of the Final Bill.
